Hollywood's most vicious sibling feuds of all time

Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine remain one of Hollywood's most famous, and publicized, sibling feuds to this day. With a 15-month age difference, their careers, awards and love lives overlapped closely, leading to feuding fame for the sisters.

Younger sister Joan won an Oscar and married first, tying the knot with her sister's ex, Brian Aherne. Olivia didn't often address the feud, but in 1957, she said it began with a comment from her sister about her first husband, while Joan described differing opinions on caring for their ill mother and reportedly finding out about her mother's death indirectly.

Creativity often runs in the family, as shown by Madonna and her brother Christopher Ciccone, who worked as an artist, dancer and designer. Christopher was a strong collaborator during her early career — working as Madonna's creative and tour director, as well as appearing in the music video for the 1983 track "Lucky Star."

However, his 2008 memoir, Life with My Sister Madonna, painted his sister as controlling and prompted a long estrangement between the two. Fortunately, they reconciled before Christopher sadly died of cancer in 2024.

Political tensions around the dining table are a relatable scene to many, but the Baldwins have to perform at least some of these differences in public. Billy Baldwin has revealed it "used to be a lot easier" to keep the peace, adding he and his brothers are "battling."

While brothers Billy and Alec are both Democrats, Stephen and Daniel are both Trump supporters. This had led to tension, despite the family trying to put politics aside, according to Billy. Things came to a head when Alec impersonated Trump on SNL, a skit which brother Stephen said had gone "too far."

Julia and Eric Roberts' feud came from a unique place of deep family love. While her brother Eric struggled with addiction, Julia supported his ex Kelly Cunningham in her battle for custody of their daughter Emma, funding the case. 

Eric has since said he was terrible and dangerous company at the time and the pair have reconciled. He publicly apologized to his sister in his memoir, Runaway Train.

Warren Beatty and Shirley MacLaine have a complicated relationship, but there's plenty of love hiding between the cracks. 

They reportedly came to a head over Shirley's depiction of their family over the years, particularly about their father's drinking, as well as over a joke made by the actress about Warren's love life during an Oscars telecast. But Shirley shared to People in 2024: "We're very close. We're very close. We don't let that be known, but we're very close."

Singer Britney Spears and her actress sister Jamie Lynn Spears continue to be in one of Hollywood's most enduring and layered sibling feuds. Britney has accused her sister of promoting memoir Things I Should Have Said at her expense, with Jamie painting her sister's behavior as "erratic" in the book.

Jamie Lynn was also named as a trustee on her sister's SJB Revocable Trust, which managed the singer's wealth and assets. While speaking about the conservatorship Britney was under, and that the singer heavily criticized, Jamie Lynn stated she was always there to support her sister and "took steps to help" end the conservatorship.
