Laurie Metcalf might now be a household name for her role as the ever-loving, and truly intimidating, mother of Big Bang Theory genius Sheldon Cooper, but before that she won a breakout role in the late '80s on beloved sitcom Roseanne.

Born Laura Elizabeth "Laurie" Metcalf on 16 June 1955, the actress rose to fame with roles on the stage before her breakout casting in TV sitcom Roseanne.
Before this, she worked on Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), an episode spot on SNL in 1981 and Candy Mountain (1987), among others.

1991
In 1991, Laurie appeared in one of her best-loved roles as Susie Cox in JFK. The acclaimed drama stars Gary Oldman and Kevin Costner.
JFK (1991) took home two Oscars, but Laurie would have to wait until 2018 for her Academy nod.

1992
Laurie Metcalf is a stalwart of sitcom classics, with credits on Roseanne, The Big Bang Theory and The McCarthys.
But she's also done plenty of work in more hard-hitting film and TV, including cult classic Lady Bird, crime thriller Blink and Netflix biopic series Monster: The Ed Gein Story.

1995
It wasn't just sitcom fans who recognised Laurie's talent for the screen.
The role of Jackie Harris earned her five Primetime Emmy nominations across the show's original run and its 2018 revival. Of these, Laurie won three awards consecutively between 1992 and 1994.

1999
Laurie is a mother of four. She shares her oldest child Zoe with her first husband, actor Jeff Perry, and raised three more children with her second husband, Roseanne co-star Matt Roth.
Her sitcom stardom has been neatly handed down to daughter Zoe, who took on the role of a young Mrs Cooper in Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon.
