John Travolta wasn't left behind the paint counter, rather he reached the heights of side-stepping star-power – in part, thanks to his mother and father who supported and encouraged their children to careers in showbiz. From John's mother Helen, to the actor himself and now John's daughter, it's clear the Travolta family have some strong showbiz instincts.

John Travolta's musical megafame

The Travolta love story

Salvatore Travolta, who was an American football player turned tire salesman, married Helen Cecilia Travolta, an actress, singer and drama teacher. Together, they raised six children, including John, and provided them with a happy childhood.

John provided some insight into his early life to Youth Time Magazine, saying: "I come from a working class family. My father was making a living doing what he loved, but we never had an overabundance of money. So any ups and downs were not that significant for me."

Helen Travolta worked as an actress, singer and teacher

Helen's acting heyday

Born on 18 January 1912, Helen Travolta worked as an actress and singer, later earning a living as an English and drama teacher. Whilst her acting career never took off like John, or his sister Ellen, she still played a small part in one of John's most memorable movies.

She ran a local drama programme, offering her creative children a childhood filled with opportunity for expression. She sadly passed on 3 December 1978 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 66 after a battle with cancer.

One of John Travolta's best-loved roles is the fast-footed Tony Manero who longs for his weekend escape from a dead-end job at the paint store.

But there was a little light at the DIY counter, as John's real-world mother Helen cameoed as an unnamed customer.

Salvatore's sporting stardom

Born on 8 November 1912, father-of-six Salvatore Travolta was a semi-professional football player before becoming a tire salesman.

He passed at the age of 82 on 29 May 1995. His grave inscription sweetly reflects the love of the Travolta family, reading: "The most wonderful husband, daddy, grandpa, and friend to all."
