The "Rule of Three" may be an internet conspiracy theory, but the idea has come to pass several times over the decades, pointing to a strange pattern that occurs with celebrity deaths.
The rule was born in 1959, when musicians Buddy Holly, 22, Ritchie Valens, 17, and The Big Bopper (Jiles Perry Richardson Jr.), 28, all died in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, on February 3, leaving the world devastated.

The trio were coming from a show when they decided to charter a plane to their next destination, despite rough winter weather and poor visibility. Everyone on the plane was sadly killed, and the incident became known as "The Day the Music Died", which was later immortalised in Don McLean's hit song, 'American Pie'.
Join HELLO! as we revisit the uncanny times that celebrity deaths appeared to follow the "Rule of Three", with three stars passing away within days or weeks of each other.
In the span of just nine days in August 2026, the world lost some of its most iconic stars: Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere, country music queen Dolly Parton, and trailblazing actor Tim Curry.
Hayden passed away on August 16, just days before her 37th birthday, from an accidental drug overdose inside a South Carolina apartment.
Then, on August 25, Dolly's family announced she had died at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer, leaving the world in utter shock.
Tim passed away on the same day from coronary artery disease, with a history of stroke and kidney cancer also listed as contributors to his death.
Catherine O'Hara, James Van Der Beek and Eric Dane
Another string of celebrity deaths came in a span of three weeks in early 2026, starting with the death of Schitt's Creek actress and comedy legend Catherine O'Hara, who died suddenly from a pulmonary embolism on January 30 at the age of 71.
On February 11, Dawson's Creek star James Van Der Beek died aged 48 following a lengthy cancer battle, leaving behind six young children and his wife, Kimberly Brook.
Grey's Anatomy actor Eric Dane's death a week later at age 53 completed the strange rule of three, after he battled ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, for several years.
2009 was a tragic time for the entertainment industry, particularly in June, when game show host Ed McMahon, Charlie's Angels actress Farrah Fawcett and superstar Michael Jackson all passed away.
Ed went first on June 23, aged 86, and while no cause of death was released, his publicist shared that he had been suffering from several illnesses in the years leading up to his passing.
Farrah died two days later at 62 from anal cancer, sparking an outpouring of grief, which only grew when people discovered that legendary entertainer Michael Jackson, 50, had died on the same day from a cardiac arrest brought on by acute propofol intoxication.
His physician, Conrad Murray, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011 for administering Michael a powerful anaesthetic to help him sleep, which ultimately led to his death.
2016 was a dark year for showbiz, starting with the deaths of music icon David Bowie, revered British actor Alan Rickman, and music producer René Angélil, who was the husband of Céline Dion.
David died first on January 10 from liver cancer at 69, with his Grammy-winning album Blackstar being released two days later as a farewell to his fans.
Alan, also 69, then passed away on January 14 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, leaving fans devastated. René's passing came on the same day, after he succumbed to throat cancer at 73.
Another bout of heartbreaking celebrity deaths occurred around the holidays in December 2016, starting with the loss of legendary musician George Michael on December 25. He was just 53 when he died from natural causes as a result of heart disease and a fatty liver.
Next came Star Wars icon Carrie Fisher, who died on December 27 at age 60 from a cardiac arrest. Shockingly, her mother, Singin' in the Rain actress Debbie Reynolds, died from a stroke only a day later, aged 84, leaving their family inconsolable.
January 2022 was another tough month for both Hollywood and the fashion world, with Sir Sidney Poitier, Bob Saget and André Leon Talley all passing away within weeks of each other.
94-year-old Sidney, a trailblazing actor and the first Black man to win an Oscar, died of heart failure on January 6 after battling Alzheimer's disease and prostate cancer.
Bob, who was best known for starring in Full House and its sequel, Fuller House, tragically passed away on January 9 at age 65. Investigators determined that he had likely fallen and hit his head inside his hotel room before dying in his sleep.
Finally, André died nine days later from a heart attack at age 73. He was a trailblazing fashion journalist, serving as the first Black creative director of Vogue and later its editor-at-large, leaving an immeasurable impact on the fashion world.
1997 saw the deaths of three global icons, all just a month apart from each other.
Gianni Versace, the 50-year-old Italian fashion designer and founder of luxury fashion house Versace, was shot and killed on July 15, 1997, outside his home in Miami. He was murdered by Andrew Cunanan, a serial killer with no clear motive as to why he shot Gianni.
Princess Diana's death, of course, rocked the world and changed the royal family forever. She died in a Parisian hospital on August 31 after being involved in a high-speed crash inside a tunnel while trying to escape the paparazzi. She was travelling with her partner, Dodi Fayed, their chauffeur, Henri Paul, and her bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, who was the sole survivor of the horrific crash. Diana was just 36 years old at the time.
Six days later, humanitarian and religious figure Mother Teresa, who was later canonised as a saint in September 2016, died aged 87 in India. She passed away from a heart attack after suffering several health issues.
