Jenny's "from the block" style goes uptown

With creations seemingly inspired by Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Carolina Herrera and Dolce & Gabbana, Jennifer Lopez's new clothing collection seems more ready for a fashion week runway than a walk around the local block.

Since the J Lo line was launched two years ago, staples have included "urban athletic" pieces such as those ubiquitous velour tracksuits, streetwise denim and club-ready sexy tops. But the new collection has taken style up a notch, also including more sophisticated, ladylike looks – a reflection of the singer-dancer-actress' ever-changing personal tastes.

"Jennifer's very involved and she keeps evolving," says Denise Seegal, president and CEO of Sweetface Fashions, the holding company of J Lo, later adding: "The customers want to emulate her and the lifestyle she leads."

As a result, she says, the company "went on to position the brand as a lifestyle one, to create a full wardrobe".

And a full wardrobe it is. The recent introduction of accessories – including hats, scarves and "bling-bling" faux jewellery – as well as an upcoming footwear line means the average shopper can be outfitted, literally head-to-toe in J Lo gear.

The new looks - seemingly inspired by catwalk favourites such as Marc Jacobs and Carolina Herrera - are a stark change from the streetwise track suits and "fly girl" gear seen previously
