M&S rocks with a new collection

When a model stepped onto the runway to Madonna's new single Hung Up and slipped off a beige trench-coat to reveal a navy one-piece swimsuit with a diamante collar, fashionistas knew they were in for a treat.

This wasn't the New York or Paris catwalks, however, but a foretaste of Marks & Spencer's spring collection and the costume was a snip at just £29.50. Buoyed up by the buzz generated after a glossy ad campaign by Twiggy, Erin O'Connor and Laura Bailey last month, the store's fashion directors put on a sizzling show.

Critics are hailing the range, which is out in January, as a bold and confident return to the high-street retailer's best. M&S' designers have clearly been taking notes from the industry's top names.

Stella McCartney's cropped tailoring was very much in evidence, with culottes, city shorts and trousers all getting a look in. For those in a nostalgic mood there were Bardot-esque nautical pieces such as stripey knits and espadrilles that wouldn't have appeared out of place in Seventies St Tropez.

A version of Roland Mouret's famous "Galaxy" dress apppeared in black and white pinstripes - without the expensive corsetry. There were also references to Chloé and Lanvin with floaty, chiffon skirts and a jade Empire-line waisted cocktail dress.

And certain lucky celebs will have even more reason to get their hands on the designs after receiving the store's exclusive black discount card. M&S bosses revealed the card had been given to stars who'd "been supportive and said nice things about the company in the past".
