Since its debut in 1913, Chelsea Flower Show has blossomed into more than the highlight of the British horticultural calendar. Hosted every spring in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the annual spectacle has become one of the most elegant fixtures of the social season.

It's a place where horticultural excellence meets high society style, and where fashion takes centre stage just as much as the foliage. From the late Queen’s signature pastel coats to today's celebrity bohemia, the Chelsea Flower Show has long provided a uniquely British runway.

Over the decades, its guest list has read like a roll call of royalty and fashion aristocracy. Queen Elizabeth II made practical elegance her signature in candy coloured tailoring and sensible shoes designed for navigating pathways, while Princess Diana brought a softer glamour in immaculate skirt suits and polka dots throughout the 80s and 90s.

More recently, Princess Kate has mastered polished countryside chic in pieces by Erdem, Emilia Wickstead and ME+EM, while Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung have championed the festival-inspired fashion now synonymous with modern Chelsea.

As the event evolved from horticultural exhibition to society institution, its fashion moments became a reflection of Britain itself - traditional yet trend aware, elegant yet eccentric. Here, I revisit some of the most unforgettable looks to grace the lawns of the Chelsea Flower Show.

Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, chose romantic, ethereal dressing for her 2019 visit to the grounds. Her dreamy white midi dress, featuring intricate lace panelling and fluid bohemian kaftan sleeves, was designed by Zimmermann. She accessorised with a simple metallic clutch and pale pink suede heeled pumps.
