Gillian Anderson has always had a knack for surprising her fans, and her latest appearance at the Cannes Film Festival may be one of her most striking transformations yet.
The 57-year-old actress stepped out at the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival on May 13 for the Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma photocall, unveiling a bold new 80s inspired look that instantly set social media alight.
Known for her sleek, polished style, Gillian swapped her signature straight locks for a voluminous cascade of blonde curls, and the result was nothing short of show-stopping.
Leaning playfully over a balcony as photographers clamoured below, the actress radiated confidence and joy, her tumbling curls catching the light and framing her face in soft, dramatic waves. In another moment, she glanced over her shoulder with effortless poise, offering a glimpse of the intricate detailing on her gown — and, of course, that headline-making hair.
For the occasion, Gillian wore a sleeveless ivory Miu Miu dress adorned with delicate floral accents and beaded embroidery. The ethereal design complemented her fresh new hairstyle perfectly, while a pair of heeled sandals and sparkling Chaumet jewellery added a touch of refined glamour.
Fans were quick to react to the transformation, flooding comment sections with praise. "Fabulous and you just brought big hair back!! Love it," one wrote, while another added: "Excuse me??? How are we supposed to recover from THIS look??" A third simply summed up the mood: "THE HAIR!!!! OMG!!!"
While the look may feel like a departure, longtime admirers will know that Gillian has embraced curls before, though rarely with such dramatic volume. This time, the style felt like a confident reinvention, perfectly in tune with the daring spirit of Cannes.
The actress is in the French Riviera to promote her latest project, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, in which she stars alongside Hannah Einbinder. The film, written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, follows a queer director working on a slasher franchise sequel who becomes obsessed with casting the original film’s "final girl," sending both women into a spiral of psychological and sexual tension.
Jane has spoken openly about having Gillian in mind while writing the script, revealing that the actress was a formative figure for many growing up. "For so many of my friends, their coming of age was about Dana Scully," she told Deadline, referencing Gillian’s iconic role in The X-Files. "Meeting her felt like I was meeting a parent who had raised me."
She added that Gillian’s commitment to her craft made her the perfect choice for the role, describing her as "an incredibly committed and serious actor" with a classical, rigorous approach.
