"You've got to be really focused about what you want if you're going to start your own label.

What it's about, what it is, what makes it different. What makes you unique? Really look at that and work out what you have to say and how it's going to be different from somebody else. It's your world and your vision that makes you interesting and different.

Be prepared to do any kind of work that's thrown at you.

Even if it's driving vans – the things I've done over the years are too unusual to even put in print.

Learn a lot from doing all of those things.

Get as much experience as possible in lots of different areas. Not everyone can be a designer. There's a shortage of really amazing pattern cutters in the world at the moment. There's lots of really good jobs in the fashion industry that may not have your name in lights but you get good money and a nice life."

Giles also spoke about his new collection for Debenhams, which is modelled by fashionista Daisy Lowe, revealing that when he designed he tried to think of the 'everyday woman'. "The pieces that are in there are for everyday women when they want to dress up and feel special and put something on with timeless glamour to it," he explained. "If we manage to achieve that, I'll be happy."

The Giles Deacon Edition Collection for Debenhams is available in Debenhams stores and online at Debenhams.com/women/giles-edition.
