Princess Diana showcased so many iconic style moments throughout her life as a working royal. As a fashion editor who specialises in royal style, I feel like I am privy to most of them - they are forever etched in my mind.
One of my favourites, though, was back in 1981. The mother of Prince William and Prince Harry was famously looked upon as a real-life 'sleeping beauty' during 'The Splendours Of The Gonzagas' exhibition gala at London's Victoria and Albert Museum, when she fell asleep in front of the world's media.
The Princess had a very good reason for nodding off - the next day, her first pregnancy announcement was made, explaining the reason behind her exhaustion.
Artfully positioned, without being slumped over, and wearing the most stunning blue ruffle gown, I think we can all agree that Diana looked straight out of a Disney movie.
The iconic chiffon number was designed by the luxury fashion label Bellville Sassoon and featured a delicate ruffle overlay at her bust and enchanting ribbon detail. A true frothy, fairytale fashion moment, this style is the epitome of regal dressing.
Princess Kate's ruffle dress moment
The Princess of Wales may have taken some styling tips from her late mother-in-law with her own take on the ruffle-bust dress.
The mother of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis donned this billowing green style during the royal tour of the Caribbean in 2022. Also looking like a Disney princess in her racing green frock by royally-loved brand Jenny Packham, Kate's glittering dress was brimming with fairytale energy.
Like Diana's, the sumptuous tulle gown had a modern off-the-shoulder, Bardot neckline, which was gathered and three-dimensional as it wrapped around the bust.
With her famous mane swept back off her face in a tightly woven bun, Kate's epic gown took centre stage, and royal fans all over the world fell in love with it, particularly as the Princess decided to coordinate her jewels with this gown, borrowing emerald jewellery from the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The brunette royal also had the Royal Family Order and the GCVO Star pinned to the bodice of her gown. She wore the style at a special dinner hosted by the Governor General of Jamaica.
