The Princess of Wales, 44, is known to wear hemlines that are categorised as 'midi' in length. This is not only due to her classic personal preference, but also her adherence to the unofficial royal style rule that prefers royal women to opt for hemlines no higher than four inches above the knee.

Although this hasn't been confirmed, due to the fact there is no official royal style etiquette book for the public to see, we take our information from style experts and from studying the formal dressing ethos the royal family follows.

However, back in 2011, Kate, then known as the Duchess of Cambridge, donned an eye-catching, butter-yellow dress by Jenny Packham, as she arrived at Calgary Airport in Canada. The newly married royal couple were on the eighth day of their first joint overseas tour, which included a 12-day visit to North America.

Kate's choice of dress was classic and chic, but the hemline was definitely shorter than one she'd wear today. Due to the flippy, fluid fabric of the skirt, it floated around her legs as she walked the tarmac, and the strong Canadian wind almost made the frock fly up!

Kate, however, handled it with grace and smiled confidently at waiting photographers, ignoring the somewhat fashion faux pas.

Princess Kate's introduction to nude high heels

Royal fans also got a glimpse of her iconic nude high heels on this trip, which quickly went viral that same year.

Kate's choice of heel came from now-defunct UK brand L.K. Bennett. The royal opted for the 'Sledge' high heel pumps, and they quickly became her go-to shoes, which she wore frequently until 2014.

The comfortable, durable heels added a polished tone to her outfits and had a price tag of £195 at the time of purchase. The signature court shoes were set on a sleek stiletto heel and included a modern platform, flattering almond toe and enhanced, curved-to-the-heel shape.

The shoes hit headlines when the wife of Prince William wore them on a visit to a mosque in 2012 - and took them off as a mark of respect before she entered.
