“I’m blonde, I shake my ass and I pull funny faces. And I get a gold popcorn-shaped award to take home,” Cameron Diaz said on Saturday night, accepting an award for best dance sequence at the 2001 MTV Movie Awards. Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey turned out for the annual event, which features such cheeky categories as best kiss and best fight, held at Los Angeles’ famed Shrine Auditorium.
Bring It On star Kirsten Dunst and Saturday Night Live’s Jimmy Fallon co-hosted the irreverent show, featuring presenters Halle Berry, Sean “Puffy” Combs and action star Jackie Chan.
Halle, joined on stage by her Swordfish co-stars John Travolta and Hugh Jackman, convinced the pair to show a little skin. “There have been all these stories about how I am getting $500,000 for baring my boobs. That’s $250,000 per boob,” she said. “If you want to see these pay eight dollars fifty to see Swordfish – but tonight I think we should have John and Hugh revealing at least one body part.” The Hollywood hunks were happy to oblige, lifting their shirts and flashing their assets.
The ceremony, which airs in the US on MTV on Thursday, featured a series of musical performances, most notably a dazzling cover of Lady Marmalade from the soundtrack to Moulin Rouge. In revealing corsets and over-the-top hair, R&B ladies Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya and Pink performed their rendition of the saucy song after Nicole Kidman, unable to attend the ceremony, introduced the “soul sisters” via video.
Tom Cruise picked up a gong for best male performance for Mission: Impossible 2, with the film’s director John Woo scoring for best action sequence. Best fight went to Zhang Ziyi of critics' darling Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Julia Roberts, though absent from the evening, repeated her Oscar glory by picking up the signature golden popcorn for best female for Erin Brockovich. And perpetual winner Jim Carrey scored with MTV viewers again and was named best villain for The Grinch.
