Latin heart-throb Antonio Banderas will portray famed racing driver Ayrton Senna in an upcoming biopic endorsed by the sportsman’s family. The film will centre around the Brazilian’s untimely death and insiders say the movie may uncover new information about the three-time world champion’s past.

“There are a lot of things people know,” says Senna’s older sister Viviane. “But there are also a lot of things that people don’t know and that only the family can reveal.” Members of the celebrated driver’s family have met with filmmakers to discuss the project and will have a hand in the plot details.

“Antonio Banderas wanted us to collaborate and bring that side of things to light – all that Ayrton saw and felt, both on and off the track,” says Viviane.

The Evita star secured the film rights to Senna’s story from the family and is eager to step into the coveted role. “This character was tormented and having a bad time and predicting that he was going to die,” he said.

Senna perished at the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola in 1994 when his car crashed into a concrete wall.

Antonio has just wrapped filming on Once Upon A Time In Mexico, the sequel to El Mariachi he shot alongside pop star Enrique Iglesias. He’s also lined up to star in a sequel to the summer blockbuster Spy Kids.
