Although she is said to be recovering well from the brain haemorrhage suffered at the end of last month, Sharon Stone looked a shadow of her former self when she was snapped emerging from a San Francisco hospital after undergoing a ten-minute check-up. Despite the autumn sunshine, the Basic Instinct star was wrapped up in a fur-trimmed coat, polo neck and jeans.

The 43-year-old actress, one of Hollywood’s most intelligent stars, was rushed to hospital on September 29 by husband Phil Bronstein, after complaining of “the most painful headache of my life”. Doctors at the California Pacific Medical Center transferred her to the neurological facilities of the Moffit/Long Hospital at the University of California, where she was found to have a subarachnoid haemorrhage.

After a week in hospital, where she underwent an endovascular coil embolisation, an operation to block the blood flow through a damaged artery in her brain, Sharon was allowed to go home. The hospital’s cerebrovascular surgeon, Michael Lawton, was upbeat about the star’s progress: “Sharon Stone is completely intact neurologically and she will have no medical restrictions on her personal or professional activities,” he said.
