The nominations for this year's Tony Awards – the Oscars of Broadway – look more like they're straight out of Hollywood.
Retro musical Hairspray, which is based on a John Waters film of the same name, emerged as the top nominee, finding a place on 13 shortlists. Another critically acclaimed show, Nine – it coincidentally received nine nominations – features a number of Tinseltown names. Ally McBeal's Jane Krakowsky, actress Mary Stuart Masterson and Spy Kids star Antonio Banderas all were nominated for their performances in the musical.
There was no shortage of big screen actors on the list of honorees. Oscar winner Paul Newman, Stanley Tucci, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Brian Dennehy and Magnolia star Philip Seymour Hoffman are among the movie stars receiving nominations for their stage work.
Another actress familiar with the film world, six-time Academy Award nominee Vanessa Redgrave, heads up the roster of British talent to receive nominations. Comedian Eddie Izzard has been recognised, as well as UK performers Hamish McColl and Sean Foley, for The Play What I Wrote directed by Kenneth Brannagh.
Aussie Moulin Rouge filmmaker Baz Luhrmann also has reason to celebrate – his revival of La Boheme is up for six gongs, including best musical director.
