Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross is looking forward to becoming a mum for the first time at the age of 44. The small screen favourite has confirmed that she and her husband Tom Mahoney will welcome a little boy or girl in spring 2007.

The news comes just a few months after she and her stockbroker love tied the knot, but the flame-haired actress made no bones about her desire to start a family as soon as possible. "I definitely want to be a mom," she said at the time.

Last year Marcia also spoke candidly about the problems that face many women who want to have children in their 40s and indicated that she might adopt or use a surrogate mother.

"I don't like the average woman being misled into thinking that fertility is something that goes on forever," she said. "When a woman gets older, they get donor eggs, which doesn't make the baby any less beautiful or perfect. One's own eggs only last so long, and sometimes at 43 or 44 you can have your own baby, but statistically it's very difficult and expensive. You don't want to wait that long."
