Mum-of-two Reese Witherspoon has been doing her bit to help some of Los Angeles' less fortunate youngsters. The actress met up with fellow proud parents Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner for a gala event staged by the Children's Defence Fund this week.

The Tinseltown trio took time out of their hectic schedules to help boost the organisation's Beat The Odds programme, which celebrates young people who have managed to find success despite the challenges of poverty, homelessness and substance abuse.

And they weren't the only A-listers causing a stir on Thursday evening, as stars of the British and American small screens turned out for the Directors Guild of America Honours in New York.Prime Suspect star Helen Mirren, who was escorted by her husband Taylor Hackford, had gone along to congratulate veteran actor Danny Glover and The Sopranos producer David Chase as they were celebrated at the glitzy soiree.

And fittingly enough, it was Tony Sorprano himself - aka James Gandolfini - who led tributes to his show's renowned creator, while one-time ER actor Don Cheadle stepped in to present Danny with his gong.
