Newly-single Michelle Williams enjoyed some girly time with her daughter Matilda in New York on Wednesday. The Marilyn star recently split from Jason Segel, her partner of one year. But Michelle didn't let any sign of sadness show as she walked hand in hand with seven-year old Matilda, her daughter from her relationship with her former fiance the late Heath Ledger, in the Big Apple's trendy Flat Iron district.

They visited Restoration Hardware, the luxury homestore, but left empty handed. Michelle was effortlessly stylish in a grey coat, black skinny jeans, ankle boots and she added a splash of colour with a vibrant checked scarf. Matilda has clearly inherited her mum's sense of style, opting for eye-popping brights wearing yellow polka dot leggings, a sailor stripe dress and a neon knitted hat. Mother and daughter must have had lots to catch up on. Last week Michelle was in London for the premiere of her new all-star film Oz The Great and Powerful  with cast members including Mila Kunis and James Franco. It seems that distance was the deciding factor in Michelle and Jason's mutual split. Mum and daughter live in Brooklyn, while Jason primarily resides in Los Angeles where he films his CBS series, How I Met Your Mother. Jason was Michelle's most serious boyfriend since the death of Heath Ledger in 2008. He clearly developed a strong bond with the late actor's daughter. The 33-year-old was often pictured playing with Matilda and escorting both his girls around town. Another of Hollywood's most hands on mums was out shopping with her two youngest children on Wednesday. In LA mum-of-three Jennifer Garner one-year-old Samuel and Seraphina, 4, to the Pacific Palisdaes mall. Adorable toddler Samuel sat happily on his mum's hip while they browsed coloured jeans in a shop. She kept them amused by pulling funny faces and delighted them with her supermum strength as she carried them on either hip. The Juno star was dressed for mum duties in a checked shirt with skinny jeans and wedge boots. Toddler Samuel and his big sister Seraphina both wore cosy grey knits to keep the LA chill at bay.

The mum-of-three has spent lots of quality time with her brood since the end of the awards season which saw her husband Ben Affleck's blockbuster Argo scoop numerous gongs on both sides of the Atlantic. Family is clearly fundamental to Ben and Jennifer, who secretly married in June 2005 after meeting on the set of action thriller film Daredevil. When actor-turned-director Ben accepted his Oscar for Best Picture for Argo at the 85th Academy Awards, he dedicated it to his three children. He also thanked his proud wife of eight years and said of their marriage, "It's the best kind of work and there is nobody else I would rather do that kind of work with." Ben's family were also on hand with grooming advice and encouraged him to get rid of the beard that he had sported for the awards season. "She and the kids did not like the beard," he said. "It has an exposed wire vibe. It was hated in my home." Ben shaved the beard off with clippers at a private Oscars afterparty in a restaurant. Jennifer was so keen to see him shave that she "actually brought the clippers to the party," according to a source.
