Despite studying business management in college, Taylor left during his third year to move to Hawaii where he took up carpentry and learnt to surf. But college was where Taylor discovered his passion for acting. He told USA Today in 2012 that his acting class "held my interest outside of the classroom more so than any other subject I'd ever taken".
Taylor's first acting role came in 2006, when he starred in the short-lived Fashion House, but he first found fame in the hugely popular teen drama the Vampire Diaries, with the recurring role of Mason Lockwood. He currently has a lead role in Chicago Fire, a drama series that follows the lives of firefighters and paramedics in the American city of Chicago. He has also starred in the Oscar-winning drama Zero Dark Thirty.
Taylor and Lady Gaga met in 2011 on the set of her music video You & I. Taylor played Gaga's love interest - and fittingly, in the video Taylor wore her mother's wedding dress for various scenes - but the pair didn't begin dating until several months after meeting.
Although Lady Gaga and Taylor try to keep their relationship private, the Poker Face singer does often post snaps of the pair on her Twitter account. Taylor, however, keeps his account for keeping up-to-date with his fans, regularly retweeting fan art and reminding them to watch the show.
Taylor is Lady Gaga' biggest supporter and her best friend. "He's the first man that I have dated that, when I sing onstage, he cries," Gaga told The Times in 2014. "That means more to me than anything." A year before that revelation, Gaga also admitted that "having your lover be your best friend is the best thing ever". Speaking to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, she added: "We're boys. I wear his flannels and we eat pizza and watch TV. And then I play him my next single. He likes it, and that's our normal life."
