The Chicago franchise launched in 2012 with Chicago Fire, starring Taylor Kinney. A year later, Chicago PD premiered following the crew of the Intelligence Unit. And in 2015, the franchise grew when Chicago Med premiered, focusing on the doctors and nurses of the fictional Gaffney Medical Center in Chicago.
And the franchise has generated nearly $2 billion for the state of Illinois, which is its backdrop. Each of the Chicago franchise's season finale premieres on Wednesday, May 13 – back to back to back. But, will they be renewed for another season? Keep reading for all the need-to-know details about Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD.
Chicago Med
Season 11 of Chicago Med premiered on October 1, 2025. The show kicked off with Maggie Lockwood, played by Marlyne Barrett, stepping away from the Emergency Department. So far, there's been hidden terminal illnesses, a dangerous, escaped prisoner storyline, and two characters navigating a complicated romance.
And the finale is reported to be thrilling. "We wanna keep the tension going, but we also, in the finale, I wanted to make sure that a lot of things were emotionally paid off and that everybody had the proper catharsis for all the things that we built up," show runner Allen McDonald told NBC Insider. "And it was important to me that that happened, and I certainly hope that it does happen for the viewers."
Luckily for fans, Chicago Med will come back for a 12th season. While its official date has been announced, the medical drama is expected to premiere in late September or early October 2026.
Chicago Fire
The first of the Chicago franchise stars Taylor Kinney. "It's never lost on me how special it is to be a part of something with the longevity this has," he told Us Weekly in a May 2022 interview. "It's a testament to [series creator] Dick Wolf and the team of people he puts together."
In Chicago Fire's season 14 finale, it's rumored that an original character might be killed off. "The season finale event will leave you breathless," the promo warned as three original cast members played by Miranda Rae Mayo, Brandon Larracuente, and David Eigenberg are at ground zero of a massive explosion.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, the promo doesn't include Christian Stolte, which has fans thinking that either him, Miranda, Brandon, or David will be killed off. Regardless of the potential character death, Chicago Fire will be returning. Like Chicago Med, no official premiere date has been set, but we can expect it to air in late September or early October 2026.
Chicago PD
The 13th season of Chicago PD focused on the squad handling personal crises, including Ruzek's (played by Patrick Flueger) father's death, the investigations into police conspiracy by Torres (played by Benjamin Levy Aguilar), and the dangerous pursuit of a suspect named Kirby by Detective Eva Imani (played by Arienne Mandi).
"We started this season wanting to talk about roots, and that was sort of our theme of this season, wanting to explore all of our characters, where they came from, who they are because of it," show runner Gwen Sigan told Parade.
The hit show has more to discover and will do so in season 14, set to premiere in late September or early October 2026.
