Megan Fox will be able to take her mind off her split from husband Brian Austin Green with a new role on popular sitcom New Girl. The actress, who filed for divorce in August, will star in season five of the show while Zooey Deschanel is on maternity leave.

In the storyline, set to premiere in January, Zooey's character Jess will be called for jury duty out of town. She sublets her room to Reagan – a gorgeous pharmaceutical sales rep who is "in town on business" – played by the Transformers star.

Announcing the news, the show's creator and executive producer Liz Merriweather said they had written the role with Megan in mind.

"It's insane to me that such a gorgeous person can be so funny, but I guess we all just have to accept it," Liz said. "I've been a fan of her comedic skills since This is 40, and I'm so excited to have her on the show. We had Megan in mind when we wrote this part – she's the perfect person to come in and shake these guys up."

As well as announcing her exciting new role, Megan also made a return to social media on Thursday, almost six months after her last post. Sharing a black and white snap of herself, Megan wrote: "Hi. I'm still here, I just continue to have an angsty relationship with social media. But what better way to express my apprehension than with a selfie. This time in black n white!"

Megan has been going through a difficult time lately after filing for divorce from her husband following five years of marriage. According to documents obtained by TMZ, the actress cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split, and requested joint physical and legal custody of their two sons Noah, two, and 19-month-old Bodhi.

The 29-year-old is believed to have hired celebrity lawyer Laura Wasser to represent her during the divorce proceedings. In her paperwork, the star listed 15 June as the official date of their separation, despite speculation that the couple quietly split six months ago.
