Filming is officially underway on the second season of Dept. Q, just over a year after the hit detective drama captivated audiences with its twists and turns and spent six weeks in Netflix's Global Top 10.
The Edinburgh-set series, adapted from Jussi Adler-Olsen's novels by writer/director Scott Frank, stars Matthew Goode as DCI Carl Morck, who heads up a cold case unit for the Edinburgh police.
The upcoming season also introduces several new faces to the cast, including Aisling Franciosi (Speak No Evil), Greg Wise (The Crown), and Ross Anderson (Shetland).
Thanks to its gripping plot, clever writing, and stellar performances, Dept. Q was one of the best crime dramas I watched last year. I have no doubt the second season will be just as binge-worthy.
What to expect from season two
The synopsis for season two reads: "DCI Carl Morck heads up the maverick Dept. Q from the basement of an Edinburgh police station, charged with cases previously deemed unsolvable. This darkly humorous, propulsive show delivers all the pleasures of a procedural but takes us into the complex mysteries not just of the cases but of the detectives themselves."
According to executive producer Rob Bullock (Left Bank Pictures), Carl and the team tackle a "terrible crime hidden in the highest echelons of Scottish society," in the second season. Meanwhile, Manda Levin described the new episodes as "darkly delicious".
Who stars in season two?
Matthew Goode (A Discovery of Witches) will reprise his role as DCI Carl Morck, alongside his team of misfits: Alexej Manvelov (Jack Ryan, Top Dog) as Akram Salim, Leah Byrne (But When We Dance) as DC Rose Dickson and Jamie Sives (Guilt, Chernobyl) as DS James Hardy.
The series welcomes some fresh faces to season two: Aisling Franciosi (Speak No Evil, The Nightingale) as Kimmie, Greg Wise (The Crown, The Buccaneers) as Derek Powell, Nicholas Rowe (Red Eye S2, Spy Among Friends) as Thomas Fulton, Tony Curran (Outlander: Blood of my blood, Mary and George) as Winnie Calderwood, Hamish Clark (Monarch of the Glen) as Christopher Herron and Alex Ferns (Waiting for the Out, The Batman) as Phil Allenbeck.
Rounding out the new additions are Ross Anderson (Shetland, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) as Ricky Daddario, Rebecca Root (Heartstopper, The Wheel of Time) as June Lovesay, Isla Johnston (The Queen's Gambit, The Carpenter's Son) as Agnes and Amy Brenneman (The Old Man, Judging Amy) as Helen.
Other returning cast members include Mark Bonnar (Line of Duty, Ludwig) as Stephen Burns, Kate Dickie (The Witch, Game of Thrones) as Moira Jacobson, Aaron McVeigh as Jasper and Sanjeev Kohli (Still Game, River City) as Martin Flemming.
A release date for season two has yet to be announced.
