Alicia Vikander is set to lead Netflix's upcoming TV series, Enigma Variations, alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson – and it's definitely going on my watchlist.
Based on the acclaimed bestseller by Call Me by Your Name author André Aciman, the series is set to deliver an "intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love," tracing one man's transformative journey through the most significant relationships of his life.
The series is in capable hands, written and executive produced by The Wheel of Time and The Blacklist writer Amanda Kate Shuman, and backed by the production team behind The Morning Show.
With a stellar cast and crew, this lust-filled drama is shaping up to be a must-watch. Keep reading to find out all we know so far.
What is Enigma Variations about?
Directed by Oliver Hermanus (The History of Sound, Living), the series follows Paul, "a man remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him across ten transformative years," according to the official synopsis.
"'It's an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love—and in a world of endless choices, it asks the question: will we know when we’ve found the one?"
Aciman's novel received wide acclaim following its release in 2017, with The New York Times hailing it as a "magnificent, living thing," while the Boston Globe praised the author for capturing "the seismic swings and loop-the-loop giddiness of sexual infatuation".
Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer executive produce for Media Res, as well as André Aciman and Monica Levinson.
Who stars in Enigma Variations?
Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 36, leads the cast as Paul. The British actor, who shot to fame playing heartthrob Robbie in the teen comedy film Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, is known for his roles in Bullet Train, Kick-Ass and 28 Years Later.
Alicia Vikander, 37, will star as Claire, to whom Paul gets married in the novel. The Swedish actress earned global recognition for her acclaimed performance as Ava in the 2014 sci-fi film Ex Machina. The following year, she won an Oscar for her portrayal of painter Gerda Wegener in The Danish Girl. She's also known for her roles in Tomb Raider, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Jason Bourne.
Further casting details have yet to be announced.
