Jane Austen fans, listen up! The sweeping 2007 adaptation of the iconic writer's beloved coming-of-age novel, Northanger Abbey, is coming to ITVX next month – and if you haven't yet seen it, you're in for a treat. 

Felicity Jones stars as the protagonist Catherine Morland in ITV's TV film, which has been hailed as a "faithful" and a "perfectly cast" version of Austen's 1817 tale.

Northanger Abbey comes to ITVX in September

For those unfamiliar with the story, it follows 17-year-old Catherine Morland, an ardent reader of sensational Gothic novels who lets her imagination get the better of her. 

What to expect from Northanger Abbey

A satire of Gothic literature, Northanger Abbey follows Catherine Morland, a naive 17-year-old who leaves her home village for a season in Bath. But Catherine's wild imagination and obsession with Gothic literature jeopardise her social position.

A coming-of-age tale of love, social ambition and the journey from youth to maturity, Northanger Abbey is a must-watch for any Austen fan. 

A synopsis for the film reads: "Catherine Morland, a spirited young beauty from the country, enters into the debauched society of Bath with dreams and fantasies sparked by her love of gothic romance novels. There she meets two men vying for her affection - the dashing and jealous John Thorpe and the gentle and sincere Henry Tilney. Despite the advice of her mischievous new friend Isabella, Catherine treats neither as more than a dear friend.

The film boasts a stacked cast, led by Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) as Catherine, JJ Feild (Austenland) as Henry Tilney and William Beck (Casualty) as John Thorpe.

Meanwhile, Carey Mulligan (Beef) plays Isabella, alongside Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones) as General Tilney.

Popular among Jane Austen fans, the drama has been hailed as "excellent" and one of the best small-screen adaptations. One viewer described the film as a "thrilling and bang-up-to-date" take on the classic novel, while another added: "That is one of the best adaptations I've seen of classical novels.
