It's been more than 40 years since Debra Winger landed her breakout role aged 25 in the neo-Western romantic drama, Urban Cowboy – and the American actress seemingly hasn't aged a day since.

Debra became a Hollywood movie star overnight after sharing the screen with John Travolta in the acclaimed 1980 film, for which she earned BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. She followed her breakthrough success with leading roles in now-iconic movies, An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) and Terms of Endearment (1983), earning Academy Award nominations for both and firmly establishing herself as one of Tinseltown's most in-demand leading ladies.

While Debra has taken fewer roles in recent years - her most recent TV credit being the second season of Fox's Accused in 2024 - she sometimes makes red carpet appearances and shares photos with her Instagram followers.

Back in March, Debra, then 70, stepped out at the Festival De La Cinémathèque in Paris, rocking her signature curls and a radiant complexion.

Debra's Hollywood fame and acting hiatus

Following her huge success in the mid 80s, Debra became a regular fixture on both the big and small screen, starring in the 1993 romantic drama, A Dangerous Woman, and the biographical drama Shadowlands, for which she earned her third Oscar nomination.

In 1995, at the height of her career, Debra decided to take a step back from Hollywood.

Explaining the reason behind her decision, Debra told People: "The parts that were coming, I wasn't interested in. I'd already done that or I'd already felt that. I needed to be challenged. My life challenged me more than the parts, so I dove into it fully."

She added that she never left Hollywood completely, but simply "pushed the pause button."

Debra returned to the screen in the 2000s, starring in the 2008 drama, Rachel Getting Married, and Netflix's The Ranch between 2016 and 2020. She also appeared in 2017's The Lovers, the comedy-drama, The Patriot, and Apple TV's 2021 series, Mr. Corman.

Debra's family life

Debra has been married twice. Her first marriage was with actor and film director, Timothy Hutton, in 1986. The couple welcomed a son named Noah before splitting in 1990.
