In season one, (spoiler alert!) viewers were shocked to discover that the murder victim teased from the first episode was actually Perry, Celeste's abusive husband, who was killed by Bonnie during a violent fight with his wife and her friends. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Meryl's character will arrive in Monterey to search for answers about her son's death and to take care of her two grandsons. The director, David E. Kelley, previously revealed to THR that Meryl was his dream casting for the show along with Tom Hanks. According to HBO, the second season will focus on the "malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting". The synopsis also read: "Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode… the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom."

Speaking about the exciting casting choice, Reese tweeted: "Beyond thrilled to have the one, the only, Meryl Streep joining the cast of #BLL for season 2. Get ready for more wine, secrets, and Big Little Lies. Monterey better watch out". and it appears that fans of the show were equally as thrilled, with one writing: "Just engrave Meryl Streep's name on all the TV awards and send them to her now to save time. #BigLittleLies," while another joked: "Did HBO read my dream journal? #BigLittleLies."
