Time for a hair update? Of course it is. By the time the new year rolls around, we're practically crying out for a fresh style to recharge our current look - and we’re in excellent company. From Hailey Bieber's blunt bob and Bella Hadid's unconventional micro fringe to Victoria Beckham's French-girl braid - all the best celebs are switching it up right now. But which looks are set to skyrocket?

According to Pinterest’s 2023 trend forecast, a shift is taking place away from maximalist lengths and towards more pared-back styles. Rest assured, that doesn't mean that there will be a compromise on hair impact, rather many of us will be considering short cuts, ultra-cropped fringes and small braids.

Pinterest's global search data dictates that searches for "chopped bob haircut" are set to increase by 550%. Take your cues from Florence Pugh and slick your locks back, or channel supermodel Hailey Bieber with her Margot Tenenbaun-inspired just-below-the-chin style.

Micro fringe

Search interest for "micro fringes" is set to be up by 110%. In order to avoid the Emily In Paris phenomenon that is "trauma bangs" (in case you missed it, the clue's in the name), we recommend you give this one some thought before taking the plunge.

Hello! Fashion caught up with celebrity hairstylist and Tangle Teezer ambassador Liam Curran to find out how to achieve some of 2023's hottest styles:

All tied up

"I love this look because it’s so versatile and will suit everyone," Liam says. "It best suits a super-straight centre parting, the favoured look among Gen Z."

"Smooth your hair into a high sleek ponytail making sure it's as tight as possible, I like to use the Tangle Teezer Ultimate Styler brush for this. Secure in place with a hair tie.

"Run a grooming cream or oil through the top of your hair for extra sleekness and through the ends of your ponytail. Start to twist the ponytail in a clockwise motion around the base of the ponytail, and secure into place whilst leaving the ends out – these extra bits will add a youthful flair. Use some hairspray to fan out the ends for a sleek and abstract look."

Shag cut

Choppiness, texture, and a carefree attitude is all you need to nail the uber-popular shag hairstyle. "The cut is here to stay and for good reason," Liam says. "It works on all different hair lengths, but looks stunning with long, voluminous waves to create that '70s star' look."

"The au naturel "cool" girl hair is here to stay, and lived-in, undone textures are back this season," Liam explains.

"Beginning with clean, washed hair, start to brush through, using Tangle Teezer's Wet Detangler to gently remove all tangles and knots. The next step is to place your desired parting and add your favourite blow dry lotion."

"Using your hairdryer, start to remove some excess water from the hair and then section your hair into two or three-inch sections, depending on your hair thickness. Work from the back of the nape upwards.

"Starting from the roots place the Tangle Teezer Easy Dry and Go underneath the hair and glide the brush through to the tips, whilst twisting the hair through the brush in a 360° motion.

"Once the hair is dry and twisted, leave the twists in place. Repeat this process until the hair is dry and work up towards the crown, using the same method on each side of the head.

"Shake out the twists using your fingertips and finish the look with a texture spray at the roots and ends, and if you have bangs, pinch both sides together from the top – this will create a cool, effortless finish."

Deep side parting

"Who said side partings were out? With the ability to soften a look and make hair look thicker and more voluminous, a very deep side parting is set to be big for spring/summer 2023," Liam says.

"Beginning with washed and towel-dried hair, start brushing through using Tangle Teezer Original Hairbrush to gently remove all tangles and knots. Position your desired parting – the deeper to the side the better – and add your favourite blow dry lotion.

"Using your hairdryer, start to remove some excess water from the hair and then section your hair in two or three-inch sections, depending on your hair thickness, working from the back of the nape and upwards.

"Place the Tangle Teezer Easy Dry & Go Large underneath the hair and glide the brush through your hair to the tips using your hairdryer nozzle to direct the airflow downwards as you dry – the vented design allows for a fast and easy blow-dry, ideal for this smooth and sleek finish.

"Repeat this process until the hair is dry and silky, remembering to dry away from the parting to train your hair to stay put.

"If your hair is curly or coily, add your favourite curl cream when your parting is set in place. Air dry or diffuse your hair, and then twist it to keep your hair textured and full. If your hair is braided, you'll be able to sport this look as seen at Miu Miu's SS23 show.

Liquid hair

"The wet hair trend has been circulating for the last few seasons, but SS23 will see this look out in full force and worn in many ways. I love this style because it's fierce and sexy. This is the perfect look for events and parties, and it's guaranteed to stay put all night," Liam says.

"After washing your hair, remove excess water using a microfibre towel – this helps minimise breakage.

"Glide Tangle Teezer's Wet Detangler through your hair to remove all knots and tangles. If your curl type is between 3C and 4C, opt for the Wide Tooth Comb for detangling.

"Apply a generous amount of mousse or gel and brush it through for even distribution. Finish with a little product for extra hold."

Textured fluff

Gigi Hadid's ultra-voluminous disco curls at Tom Ford's SS23 show perfectly encapsulate the textured fluff look. "This is a great trend for those who want to embrace their natural textures," Liam explains. "I think the style is super empowering and makes a definite statement."

Braids all ways

"This season we are pushing the baby braids trend to the extreme and trying out double and triple braided ponytails," Liam says. "Braids are such a fun look that anyone with any hair type can do – the possibilities are endless."

"Remove any knots with Tangle Teezer's Original Hairbrush and add a serum or hair oil for a sleek effect.

"Smooth your hair into high pigtails, making sure they are as tight as possible, and secure in place with hair ties. To give them a playful touch, use colourful hair ties such as bobbles or scrunchies.

"Once they are both in place, split into two sections and braid each side and finish with a shine spray for extra gloss and dimension," Liam explains.
