We Brits are never satisfied. We complain when it's too cold, then complain when it's too hot. The second temperatures creep above 24 degrees, suddenly nobody knows what to wear, public transport becomes unbearable, and we’re all desperately searching for floaty dresses, linen trousers, sandals, and anything else that won’t leave us blistered and sweaty by lunchtime. Still, if there’s one thing a heatwave does well, it’s giving us the perfect excuse for a wardrobe refresh - and this season, the affordable fashion brands have seriously delivered.

The high street is overflowing with stunning summer buys that look far more designer than their price tags suggest. Think understated midi dresses, relaxed skirts in breathable fabrics and vibrant co-ords that you’ll wear long after the heatwave disappears.

Whether you’re heading to a pub garden, packing for a little European escape (like our editor Clare), or simply trying to survive another sticky commute in style, the high street has made dressing for soaring temperatures feel easy this summer.

Satin Colour Block Lace Trim Midaxi Cami Slip Dress

    Marks & Spencer

No colour combination is chicer than black and white. This dress is perfect for taking you from the office through to drinks with the girls.

    Satin Bubble Shorts in Ivory

    Topshop

I'm still not over the bubble hem trend, and neither should you be. The silhouette makes even the simplest of items look elevated - like this short shorts, for example.

    Guipere Top with Fireman Clasp

    Zara

Tomato red has been a huge trend over recent seasons, and this summer is no different. Pair with the matching shorts for a heatwave-ready look with a touch of vibrancy.

    Ruched Dropped-Waist Poplin Midi Dress

    Cos

This effortlessly chic dress is crafted from crisp poplin with a softly sculptural silhouette. The relaxed fit, flowing skirt and dropped waist give it that understated minimalist aesthetic Cos does so well.

    Midi Skirt with Beading

    Massimo Dutti

I'm a huge midi skirt fan - more freeing than trousers, yet much less revealing than a midi (and more office appropriate). The beading on this piece adds a subtle glam touch, so pair it with a simple tee or tank top for a daytime look with a bold edge.

White Cotton Sleeveless Shirred Tank Top

    River Island

Everybody needs a classic white top to pair with anything and everything. This shirred design is great if looking for something more interesting than a white t-shirt.

    Straight Bead-Detail Trousers

    H&M

The detailing on these peachy trousers is what makes them stand out from the crowd. The delicate lace appliqué and bead detailing at the hems are so elegant.
