The skies were dull and dismal but the headgear was anything but when the royal ladies stepped out to church at Windsor Castle this weekend. Sophie Countess of Wessex led by a head in the extravagant millinery stakes with a coffee creation decked with plumed feathers.

Her mother-in-law the Queen wore a wide-brimmed titfer in one of her favourite colours, a spring-like powder blue, with a matching checked outfit and pearls.

Princess Anne's choice was the most surprising given her classic tastes. The Princess Royal cheered onlookers waiting in the drizzle by arriving with a broad smile on her face and wearing a wicker bonnet adorned with tiny fruit.

Her husband, Tim Laurence, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Earl of Wessex were also there. Prince Charles and his wife were in Scotland where they usually spend Easter.

Unusually, none of the Queen's grandchildren was in attendance. Princess Eugenie, though, made a splash on the other side of the world in Thailand.

Prince Andrew's daughter, who is continuing her gap year travels, was seen frolicking in the waves in an itsy bitsy stars and stripes bikini.

Meanwhile her cousins William and Harry were spending Easter privately, said Clarence House. A royal source told the Telegraph nothing should be read into the absence of the grandkids as they're adults and make their own plans. "They are grown up now. They might attend next year," said the source.
