Nelson Mandela is responding to treatment but remains in a critical but stable condition.South Africa's President Jacob Zuma visited the 94-year-old in hospital on Wednesday evening and was given the update by doctors. "We are encouraged that Madiba (Mandela) is responding to treatment and urge the public to continue providing support and showering him with love which gives him and the family strength," said President Zuma.

His eldest daughter Makaziwe Mandela and granddaughter Tukwini Mandela also paid him a visit at the Mediclinic Heart Hospital. The statesman was admitted to the hospital on 8 June with a lung infection. Meanwhile, well-wishers from far and wide continue to flock to the Pretoria hospital to leave messages of support for the former leader. 

Last week, doctors treating Mr Mandela were forced to deny that the anti-apartheid icon was in a "permanent vegetative state".In a formal statement the South African government also quashed the claim that a life support machine was keeping him alive in the hospital." We confirm our earlier statement released this afternoon (Thursday) after President Jacob Zuma visited Madiba in the hospital that Madiba remains in a critical but stable condition," said a spokesman for the Presidency. South Africa's first black President recurrent lung infection that caused him to spend several days in hospital back in March.
