Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's peculiar dietary requests have been unveiled in an upcoming book.
According to the royal author Andrew Lownie, who is just days away from publishing his latest book, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, Andrew and his wife, Sarah Ferguson, had strict rules at home when it came to cuisine.
Andrew explains in excerpts which have been shared with HELLO! that the former Prince's special requests were extensive.
He wrote in the upcoming exposé: "According to one official, who arranged a visit to a Middle East country in 2008, Andrew made clear 'what he does and doesn’t eat. I heard he liked prunes for breakfast, and another post went to some trouble to ship some in, as they weren't available locally. And that he never ate garlic.'"
Royals and garlic
While a life without garlic doesn't sound ideal, Andrew's aversion to the food isn't actually as surprising as it might seem, as it was something passed down from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, due to it causing bad breath.
The fact was even confirmed by Queen Camilla herself, who, during an appearance on MasterChef Australia in 2018, was asked about prohibited Royal foods, to which she responded: "I hate to say this, but garlic. Garlic is a no-no." Given the royals’ packed schedule of public engagements, it’s easy to see why they steer clear of this one.
Despite not having it at her family home growing up, Princess Eugenie previously revealed on the Table Manners podcast that she has abandoned the family tradition, confessing that garlic is, in fact, part of her weekly shop.
"We do one [Waitrose] order every week, and everyone piles on everything they can on Sunday night and it comes on Monday morning. Sundays are quite sad, looking at my fridge.
"Nothing interesting really. Chicken, sausages, always. Potatoes, onion, garlic," lifting the lid on her rule-breaking food order."
Eugenie added at the time that she's "not allowed" to have onion and garlic at her parents' Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew's house (prior to their Royal Lodge eviction), confirming that they fear "the breath" and, like many royals, avoid the pungent foods.
