The Prince and Princess of Wales made a stylish trackside appearance on day two of Royal Ascot alongside the King and Queen. But while all the attention was on Kate's bold fashion choice in a vibrant yellow frock and matching large hat, a meaningful detail in Prince William's attire nearly went completely missed.

The Prince of Wales looked smart in a three-piece suit and black top hat on Wednesday as he nailed the formal Royal Ascot dress code. As he waved to onlookers upon arrival in a horse-drawn carriage, the royal wore a yellow daffodil boutonniere pinned to the lapel of his jacket.

The bright floral choice not only matched the colour of his wife's outfit, but was a subtle tribute and show of support for Wales. The daffodil is considered the national floral emblem of Wales and is typically worn along with leeks on St David's Day in March.

William wore Wales' national flower to Royal Ascot on 17 June, which was when the Prince of Wales’s Stakes was held this year.

The annual horse race was named in honour of Queen Victoria's son, Albert Edward, when he was the Prince of Wales, and first ran at Royal Ascot in 1862. While it took a brief hiatus from the event during the second world war, the race was reinstated a year before King Charles became the Prince of Wales in 1969.

As the current Prince of Wales, William proudly supported the long-standing race through his race day fashion.

Matching couple moment

William coordinated his daffodil boutonniere with his wife's sunny ensemble on Wednesday for the perfect matching moment.

Kate was a ray of sunshine in head-to-toe yellow, wearing one of her brightest looks to date. The royal stunned in a flattering, vibrant yellow midi dress by Roksanda with a floaty A-like skirt that draped to her ankles. The short-sleeved dress featured an oversized bow on one shoulder for a touch of drama.

The Princess of Wales teamed her race day look with a netted Jane Taylor hat over her low bun and neutral pointed-toe heels to tie the look together. Kate previously wore the same yellow dress in 2022 at the Wimbledon Women's Singles Final.

Day at the races

The Prince and Princess of Wales looked cheery as they arrived for day two of the races in the second carriage alongside the Duke and Duchess of Richmond and Gordon.

The couple were pictured laughing and smiling as they waved to the crowds, with William even offering a positive thumbs up to onlookers at one point. William and Kate were joined on the day by the King and Queen, who were in the first carriage alongside the monarch's cousin, Lady Sarah Chatto, and her husband, Daniel Chatto.

Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, and Zara and Mike Tindall were was also spotted back at the races.
