King Frederik and Queen Mary attend the opening of The Dome at ARoS
On Friday night, King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark attended the opening of ‘The Dome’ at the ARoS Art Museum.
Photos from the outing were shared on the official Instagram account for the Danish Royal Family.
The caption read: "An underground cathedral has become a new landmark in Aarhus.
"Friday night, Their Majesties The King and Queen attended the opening of ‘The Dome’ at the ARoS Art Museum. In connection with the visit, the King organized the official inauguration of the work."
Sharing details about The Dome, the post continued: "‘The Dome’ houses the artwork As Seen Below, which was created by the American artist James Turrell and will enter as a new permanent main piece in the museum’s collection.
"As Seen Below is James Turrell's Skyspace number 100. A Skyspace is an architectural space with an opening to the sky, where light, colors and the changing expressions of the sky are part of the work. The lighting of the work is experienced in interaction with the colours of the sky, especially at sunset."
What is the King's role in the appointment of a new prime minister?
The King plays an important constitutional role in the appointment of a new prime minister.
The Prime Minister is officially appointed by the Sovereign in person. This remains one of the few personal prerogatives of the sovereign.
He must appoint someone who has the ability to command the confidence of the House of Commons.
Guided by constitutional conventions, the monarch can seek advice from the outgoing prime minister, any other political leader, senior privy counsellors, or whomever he pleases within the limits of prudence and caution.
Sir Keir Starmer has informed the King of his decision to resign, but will still meet the monarch in person to formally tender his resignation.
As Sovereign, The King holds a weekly private audience with the Prime Minister to discuss Government matters. While the monarch remains politically neutral on all matters, he is able to "advise and warn" his ministers when necessary.
Sir Keir will remain in post until a successor is identified. This means the King will see the prime minister as usual later this week.
Keir Starmer resigns as Prime Minister
Sir Keir Starmer said he will resign as leader of the Labour Party and has informed the King of his decision.
The 63-year-old has asked Labour's governing body to set out a timetable to replace him, with nominations opening on July 9.
Nominations will close before the summer parliamentary recess, on 16 July to "ensure a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September".
Sir Keir said he has "heard the answer of my parliamentary party" to the question of whether he is "best placed" to lead the party into the next general election.
"I accept that answer with good grace," he said.
"That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision," continued Keir.
The politician said he would "remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete", and will "do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power".
