Lady Louise Windsor, 22, graduated from the University of St Andrews on Thursday, and during the official ceremony her full name was used, which may come as a surprise to some royal fans.

She is commonly known as Lady Louise Windsor, but she did not use the title of lady, and her surname was a little different to the one that's frequently used. She was called to the stage by the name of "Louise Mountbatten-Windsor".

The young royal was poised and smiley as she graciously walked on stage, received her graduation sash and carefully walked off.

Louise, who is King Charles's niece, beamed alongside Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie in her graduation portraits, taken at the University House following the ceremony.

Underneath her graduation gown, the 22-year-old wore a crisp white shirt for the occasion. Louise posed for the camera, proudly holding her scroll - it was the perfect family portrait.

Lady Louise, who is 17th in line to the throne, also has a younger brother, James, Earl of Wessex, though he was not seen at the occasion.

A royal tradition

The royal is said to be embarking on a gap year, as is fairly commonplace for royals to have a chance to find their way in the world and gather some life experience before embarking on working life.

After passing his A-levels, Prince William took a year off to travel before going to university. He began with a trip to the Belize jungle where he slept in a hammock and ate army rations alongside the Welsh Guard. After flying back to the UK to work on a farm, William volunteered with the charity Raleigh International to build new walkways and teach English in a mountain village in the south of Chile.

Zara Tindall's gap year was when she met her future husband, rugby player Mike Tindall. Speaking to the Daily Mail in 2011, Mike explained: "She was on her gap year and in Australia with friends. Clive (Woodward, the coach) had just told me I was dropped for the semi-final, so I went out for a beer with two others who weren't playing, Martin Corry and Austin Healey.

"Zara was in the same bar, we got introduced but didn't speak that much. Later on, Austin gave me her number and said, 'She wants you to text her, to say where you're all going out after the final so she can come along.'"

Louise and her brother are expected to work for a living, rather than becoming full-time royals. In an interview with The Sunday Times in June 2020, Sophie said of her Lady Louise and James's futures: "We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living. Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it's highly unlikely."
