Wednesday 9 September was a poignant day for Norway as their royal family gathered together to pay their respects to the late King Harald V. The state funeral was attended by many members of the Norwegian royal family but also senior figures from European royal families.
The sombre procession led from the palace to the Oslo Cathedral, where Her Majesty Queen Mette-Marit of Norway was pictured inside shedding a tear for her late father-in-law. The royal wore a tailored black dress with a matching black hat for the sombre occasion, choosing to tilt her head downwards as she wiped her eyes.

Queen Sonja was also seen with a tissue in hand, wiping her tears, as she said her final emotional goodbye to her husband.

The Queen has suffered from a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis since 2018, which scars the lungs and makes it harder to breathe.

On Monday morning, the Oslo District Court agreed to extend Marius Borg’s detention for another four weeks. But he was allowed to attend King Harald's funeral, and was seen among the mourners.

King Charles sent his son and heir to the throne, Prince William, as a representative for the British monarchy. Meanwhile, his wife, Princess Kate, decided to stay at home in England. William was joined by Princess Anne, who attended in a personal capacity to support her godson, the new monarch, King Haakon.
The Princess Royal looked downcast as she paid her respects alongside her nephew. Anne looked smart in a black blazer and scarf, with her hair in her signature coiffed style, accompanied by a black headpiece.

Harald, who died on 28 August 2026 at the age of 89, will be laid to rest in the crypt of the royal mausoleum of Akershus Castle, a medieval fortress overlooking Oslo Fjord.

In the days before his death, Harald was admitted to hospital with haemolytic anaemia, which is when the red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them with new blood. A statement from the Palace issued around the time said: "His Majesty the King's health condition is extremely serious."
