The Duke of Kent marked his 91st birthday on Friday, with the royal continuing to carry on following the death of his wife, the late Duchess of Kent, last year.

The 91-year-old made sure to celebrate in style as Wigmore Hall welcomed him for the milestone. The venue's Instagram account shared a clip of the Duke of Kent and his close friend, Prince William's godmother, Lady Susan Hussey, arriving.

The Duke of Kent was seen using a walking stick as he greeted a member of staff before going up the stairs, while Lady Susan was greeted with a kiss on the cheek.

The caption read: "We are honoured to welcome HRH The Duke of Kent and his family on his 91st birthday. Congratulations Sir!"

The Duke of Kent's heavy year

The Duke's wife, Katharine, Duchess of Kent, passed away in September 2025. Last year, he was forced to mark his 90th birthday without his wife.

When Katharine passed away, the royal family gathered to mourn her death. Led by King Charles, senior royals, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, paid their respects at what was the first Catholic funeral held for a member of the royal family in modern history.

HELLO! understands that the Duke of Sussex sent condolences privately to the Duchess of Kent's family, following her passing, rather than attending in person.

A year after this heartbreak, the Duke is also grieving the loss of his private secretary, Nicholas Turnbull, who passed away on 16 September 2026 at the age of 63.

Nicholas had served the Duke since 2019 and was appointed a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order by King Charles III just days before his death. He leaves behind two teenage sons, Alexander and Crispin.
