Queen Camilla proved that the weather spares no one, including royalty, when she suffered an awkward mishap in Wiltshire back in 2011.

The then-Duchess of Cornwall had taken a leaf out of her mother-in-law Queen Elizabeth's book and carried a clear umbrella to shield herself from the rain as she arrived in Steeple Ashton to meet members of the Wiltshire Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers.

Camilla, however, had not accounted for the wind, which appeared to make the structure collapse inwards, trapping her inside. Making light of the situation, Camilla giggled and pressed her hand on the inside to prevent it from touching her face as someone nearby tried to pry it open.

Queen Elizabeth's umbrella trick

The late monarch became known for her transparent birdcage design from Fulton Umbrellas, which allowed her to remain visible to the public while staying dry.

She would often coordinate them so well with her brightly-coloured outfit that they seemed like more of an accessory than a last-minute practical addition.

Nigel Fulton, CEO of Fulton Umbrellas, previously told HELLO!: "The Queen’s stylist would send us a colour swatch of the outfit she was going to wear, and we would produce an umbrella with a perfectly matched border. It was always about making sure she remained visible to the crowds in all weather."

Personal Dresser and Stylist Angela Kelly confirmed it was a very deliberate choice. "The Queen has always understood the visual power of her role. She once said, 'If I wore beige, nobody would know who I am.'

"Every element, from the bright coats to the transparent brollies, was designed so people who had waited in the rain for hours could actually catch a glimpse of her," she said in her memoir, The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe.

One more recent example of Queen Camilla's quick thinking in the rain happened in Jersey in 2024. Despite carrying her trusty brolly, she sought a second layer of protection from the wet weather when she was caught in a sudden downpour.

Juggling her brolly in one hand, Camilla found herself hopelessly tangled in the sleeve of her mac. Despite the King trying to subtly share his instructions, he failed to solve the issue and called over an equerry to rescue his wife from the elements.
