Sarah Ferguson managed a small smile as she reappeared in London for the first time in months on Thursday.
The disgraced Duchess was joined by Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie and their husbands at a memorial service for her ex-boyfriend, racing tycoon Paddy McNally at St Paul's Church in Knightsbridge.
The timing was quite extraordinary; it was this time last year that Sarah was stripped of her Duchess of York title and her world came crashing down through her association to Jeffrey Epstein.
Certainly Sarah's decision to attend the ceremony has raised eyebrows, and prompted important questions from royal observers.
What does Sarah's reappearance mean for her future?
Sarah has a reputation for being something of a comeback queen, and there are now questions as to whether she will attempt to make a full return to the public eye.
She didn't shrink away from the cameras on Thursday, no doubt reassured by the presence of her two girls. And she was captured smiling in the images, which featured in the Daily Mail.
Furthermore, there was another member of the royal family in attendance, Peter Phillips, a motor sports enthusiast.
But speculation this will signal the start of an official reemergence are likely premature.
Royal fans have noted that - perhaps fortuitously for Sarah - the memorial service came at a time when King Charles and Queen Camilla are out of the country.
There is also still a strong public feeling towards both Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah regarding their association with Jeffrey Epstein, something that is going to be very hard for her to shake off given the fact that the ex-Prince is still under active criminal investigation.
Despite recent legal challenges regarding how the evidence was gathered, the police are moving forward with their investigation, following Andrew's arrest on his 66th birthday in February 2026 on suspicion of misconduct in public office. It has been alleged that he shared sensitive, non-public information with Epstein while serving as the UK's official trade envoy. Andrew has denied any wrongdoing.
Will Sarah decide to tell-all?
Some experts believe that Sarah will nevertheless try to overcome this latest scandal? There has been speculation she is considering writing a tell-all book, preparing to tell her story on TV, or launching a business initiative - just as she has done before when times were tough.
"She's denied that she's writing a book, but I have no doubt she will attempt some sort of comeback at some point. Only she knows exactly how that will manifest and exactly what that will be," royal commentator Phil Dampier told HELLO!.
"But she is the comeback queen. Who knows whether, at 67, she's capable of doing it or if it's too late. But she will certainly have a try."
Sarah 'not welcome' at Andrew's home
While Sarah has managed to retain her relationship with Beatrice and Eugenie, the same cannot be said of her ex-husband Andrew.
Despite having previously described them as "the happiest divorced couple in the world", relations between the pair have fallen apart in light of the Epstein scandal.
Both Sarah and Andrew lost their major honours and titles following revelations about their ties to the convicted paedophile. They were also instructed to leave Royal Lodge.
Andrew, 66, now lives at Marsh Farm, a five-bedroom property on the King's Sandringham estate. And while it was thought that Sarah was keen to keep her distance from the ex-Prince, it seems the opposite is true.
A source previously told The Times: "The red setter, as she's known, is not welcome at Marsh Farm. She's persona non grata as far as Andrew is concerned."
It's not known why she has been exiled by her ex-husband, but the cache of Epstein documents released in the US appear to show it was Sarah who introduced Andrew to Epstein.
The source also refuted speculation that Andrew is wallowing in his own company. "Don't believe all that poor Andy [explicit]. He's having a very nice time, thank you very much. He goes out, he goes off shooting with friends, he sees his old chums who are very loyal to him. He's not sitting around feeling sorry for himself any more."
Where has Sarah Ferguson been?
Sarah's last public appearance was at the Duchess of Kent's funeral at Westminster Cathedral in September 2025.
That October, she was forced to move out of Royal Lodge in Windsor, where she lived with her ex-husband, Andrew.
In December, she attended the christening of her granddaughter Athena, Princess Beatrice's baby girl, and was photographed in the back of a car.
She wasn't seen for months after that, but was reported to be spending time in Europe.
On 16 April, Sarah was photographed by The Sun at a £2,000-a-night resort near the Mayrlife Medical Health Resort in Altaussee, Austria. She wore a blue coat and a white baseball cap before again vanishing from the public eye.
It is believed she had been spending her time out of the public eye at a Swiss Alpine chalet in Verbier, while some reports suggested she visited Portugal to meet Eugenie's baby daughter, Adelaide, who was born in August.
Sarah's relationship with Paddy McNally
In August, Princess Beatrice represented Sarah at Paddy's funeral at St James's Church in Sevenhampton, as Fergie continued to stay out of the public eye.
Sarah dated Paddy in the 1980s but broke up when he failed to propose, though they remained close friends afterwards. She even reportedly stayed at his ski chalet in Verbier in the months after leaving Royal Lodge.
The former Duchess once said: "Paddy was my father figure, 22 years older than me.
"He taught me so much about life. Whenever I wanted advice, I turned to him because he was so worldly wise. He seemed to have seen and done everything."
Where is Sarah Ferguson living now?
Sarah used to live with Andrew at his former home, Royal Lodge, but he was forced to vacate the premises and move to Marsh Farm on the King’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk, while his ex-wife has needed to find a new home.
In August, The Sun reported that Sarah was returning to Britain once again and was living in the Home Counties.
The newspaper described the property as "gated" with "six bedrooms". It also has three bathrooms and a "granny annexe", according to the newspaper.
