There's something about Coogee that feels instantly more relaxed than its glitzier eastern suburbs neighbour. While Bondi often buzzes with influencers, queues and crowds, Coogee strikes the perfect balance: lively enough to feel fun, but calm enough to properly switch off. That laidback luxury is exactly what makes an overnight stay at Coogee Bay Boutique Hotel such a winning Sydney staycation, and it's easy to see why the beachside suburb is a favourite haunt of stars like Margot Robbie and Kourtney Kardashian.

Set quietly behind the iconic main hotel building, the boutique wing feels like a hidden sanctuary just moments from the beach. The design strikes a clever balance between coastal charm and contemporary comfort. In the boutique wing, soft sea-blue walls, crisp white linen and warm timber finishes create a fresh, calming feel, while thoughtful touches like window seats, marble bathrooms and generous lounge areas make the rooms feel more like stylish beach apartments than standard hotel stays.

It’s a rare find: somewhere that feels polished and modern, yet still has genuine personality. Whether you're planning a girls' overnight, a romantic weekend, a work trip with some downtime built in, or simply want to lean into Coogee's nightlife, the hotel caters to every mood.

The beauty of staying here is that everything is on your doorstep. One of Sydney’s most scenic stretches of coastline – the Coogee to Bondi coastal walk – begins nearby, making it easy to start the day with ocean views, clifftop paths and swim stops along the way.

Coogee itself has plenty to tempt you to stay local too. The beach is one of Sydney's prettiest, with calmer waters than Bondi and a more neighbourhood feel. There are ocean pools, grassy spots to picnic, and a strip of restaurants and bars that make it easy to while away an afternoon.

And if you're in the mood for a little celebrity spotting, Coogee has quietly become something of an A-list favourite. Sleek restaurant Mimi's has become one of Sydney’s most sought-after dining rooms, drawing the likes of Dua Lipa, Kourtney Kardashian and Margot Robbie.

If you want to relax and not venture too far however, one of the joys of staying at Coogee Bay is that you barely need to leave. Dinner at the hotel's Beach Bar & Dining – all hanging greenery, woven pendant lights, curved banquettes and sun-drenched corners – was exactly what a beachside dinner should be: fresh, unfussy and full of flavour.

We started with the salt and pepper squid – perfectly crisp with lemon mayo, chilli and rocket – before sharing steamed Cone Bay barramundi, served with zucchini scales, pumpkin and ginger purée and the very hearty Black Angus MB3 rump, served simply with chips and peppery rocket. And dessert – a deconstructed matcha and strawberry cheesecake – was the ideal sweet finish.

Afterwards, the hotel's many spaces made it easy to choose your own pace. There was live music and a lively atmosphere in the bar for those wanting a fun night out, but equally plenty of quieter corners for a relaxed drink, and of course the famous beer garden outside, with views of the beach.

The next morning, Coogee Bay's new breakfast offering made it tempting to linger a little longer. Served at Beach Bar, just steps from the sand, the menu is built around fresh, made-daily dishes and quality coffee.

"Our new menu is designed to fit naturally into the local morning rhythm," says Executive Chef Justin Schott. "Fresh, seasonal produce and bold flavours sit at the heart of every dish, whether it’s a quick stop after a swim or a slower start by the Bay."

From coconut chia pudding and house-made granola to eggs benedict, avocado toast and heartier dishes like smoked brisket hash, the menu strikes the perfect balance between fresh and indulgent – exactly the kind of relaxed, elevated breakfast that suits a Coogee morning. The coffee is excellent too, and the warm, upbeat staff add to the easy charm, making the whole experience feel effortlessly welcoming.

That's ultimately the charm of staying here: it lets you tap into Sydney's beachside glamour, but without the chaos.
