When someone mentions a weekend away on the New South Wales South Coast, I usually picture fish and chips by the water, sandy feet and little more than a slower pace of life.

What I wasn't expecting was a destination with an unmistakable quiet luxury feel, a thriving food scene and a level of sophistication that felt far more Byron Bay meets Noosa than traditional coastal holiday town.

Just under three hours south of Sydney, Huskisson sits on the edge of Jervis Bay, famous for its dazzling white beaches and crystal-clear water. Named Australia's  Top Tourism Towns Hall of Fame, it's long been a favourite with families and beach lovers, but after spending a weekend there, I discovered there is so much more beneath the surface.

From beautifully curated homewares stores and boutique accommodation to exceptional dining and wellness experiences, Huskisson has quietly evolved into one of Australia's most stylish coastal escapes.

A surprising start

The first surprise came almost immediately. After the easy drive from Sydney, I arrived at Jervis Bay Brewing Co expecting the sort of brewery food that often accompanies a tasting paddle.

Instead, I found a polished, community-focused venue producing small-batch craft beers alongside a menu that felt thoughtful and genuinely good.

Owner Paul talked me through the brewing process, explaining how the brewery has become something of a local institution. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, with groups of friends gathering over long lunches while children played nearby. It set the tone for the entire weekend. Nothing felt flashy, everything simply felt well done and their burgers were epic.

The quiet luxury of Huskisson

After checking into Ishtar Apartments, a contemporary stay tucked within walking distance of the beach, cafés and wharf, I headed to Few and Far.

The beautifully designed showroom could easily have been transplanted from Sydney's eastern suburbs or Melbourne's design precincts. Filled with handcrafted furniture, natural textures and neutral palettes, it perfectly captured the aesthetic that seems to define modern Huskisson.

There is a confidence to the town that doesn't need to shout. The shops are curated rather than crowded. The restaurants focus on quality rather than gimmicks and the accommodation feels thoughtful rather than over-designed.

It's luxury without logos and that feeling continued throughout the weekend.

A food scene nobody talks about

Perhaps the biggest surprise was the food. Regional dining can sometimes be hit and miss, but Huskisson's hospitality scene exceeded every expectation.

Dinner on my first evening at Wild Ginger delivered some of the most exciting flavours I ate all weekend. The contemporary Asian menu is designed for sharing, with bold dishes arriving one after another in a lively space filled with locals and visitors alike. I had the chef's banquet and the steamed perch was simply sensational.

The overall quality was exceptional, fresh ingredients, confident cooking and beautifully balanced flavours made it easy to understand why the restaurant has become one of the area's most popular dining destinations.

Later, I wandered to Flamin Galah Brewing Co, where locals gathered over craft beers in a vibrant and colourful setting that felt effortlessly cool. Again, the theme remained the same, nothing felt forced, everything felt authentic.

White sands and turquoise water

No visit to Jervis Bay would be complete without seeing Hyams Beach. Just a short drive from Huskisson, the famous stretch of coastline is often described as having some of the whitest sand in the world.

Standing there on a crisp autumn morning, it was easy to understand the hype. The water shimmered in shades of turquoise more commonly associated with tropical destinations, while the soft sand seemed almost impossibly bright beneath the morning sun.

It felt more like the Whitsundays than southern New South Wales. Even with its international reputation, the beach retained a sense of calm that made it feel wonderfully unspoilt.

Shopping with soul

Back in Huskisson, I spent the morning wandering the town's growing collection of boutiques.

Stores such as White Earth, Indigo Love, Beyond the Beach Lifestyle and The Collective Beat showcase local creativity alongside carefully selected fashion, homewares and lifestyle pieces.

Unlike many tourist towns dominated by souvenir shops, Huskisson's retail offering feels curated and design-led.

It was another reminder that this is a destination increasingly attracting visitors seeking experiences, not simply attractions.

The pasta that stopped me in my tracks

Lunch at Pasta Buoy delivered another unexpected highlight. The lively restaurant has quickly developed a reputation among locals, and after one meal it was easy to see why.

Fresh handmade pasta, generous hospitality and vibrant Italian-inspired dishes created the sort of lunch that stretches comfortably into the afternoon.

The standard of food throughout the weekend genuinely surprised me. For a town of Huskisson's size, the depth and quality of its dining scene is remarkable.

Dolphins, whales and endless blue

One of Huskisson's biggest drawcards is, of course, the bay itself. Jervis Bay is home to resident bottlenose dolphins throughout the year and attracts migrating humpback whales between May and November.

A cruise with Jervis Bay Wild offered a chance to experience the region from the water. As we travelled across the bay, passing impossibly white beaches and rugged coastline, dolphins appeared nearby, surfacing effortlessly through the clear blue water.

The experience reinforced why the area continues to attract nature lovers from around the world, the beauty here feels genuinely untouched.

Stargazing and slowing down

That evening, after drinks at Bud's Tavern and dinner overlooking the water at Huskisson Hotel, I experienced one of the most memorable moments of the trip.

Away from city lights, Jervis Bay's night skies reveal a spectacular celestial display. During a guided stargazing session, powerful telescopes brought distant planets, stars and constellations into focus.

Standing beneath a blanket of stars, surrounded by complete silence, it felt like a reminder of something many of us have forgotten. How good it feels to slow down.

Wellness by the water

My final morning brought another unexpected discovery.

At Bowline Remedial Therapy's Deep Dive Breathwork workshop, participants explored guided breathwork, meditation and ice bath experiences overlooking the coast.

Led by breathwork expert Chelsea Mazzini, the session was both energising and grounding. It perfectly reflected the evolving identity of Huskisson itself.

This is no longer simply a beach destination, it is becoming a place where people come to reconnect, recharge and embrace a slower, more intentional pace of life.

Why Huskisson deserves a place on your travel list

When I left Sydney, I expected a lovely coastal weekend, what I found was a destination redefining itself.

There are the obvious drawcards: world-class beaches, dolphin cruises, whale watching and spectacular scenery.

But it was the details that stayed with me, the beautifully designed boutiques, the exceptional food, the sophisticated accommodation and the creative community. The sense that quality matters here.

Huskisson has managed to achieve something increasingly rare. It feels luxurious without being exclusive, stylish without being pretentious and relaxed without sacrificing quality.

For travellers searching for Australia's next great coastal escape, I have a feeling the secret won't stay hidden for much longer.
