South Africa has long been famed for its golden-hour safaris. But look beyond the iconic wildlife and it won’t take you long to recognise it as a destination rich in multi-dimensional magic. It’s the kind of place where, as soon as you visit, you wonder why more people haven’t been shouting about it.

The country's pull lies in its variety: world-class winelands set against coastal ranges, a complex and layered history, a thriving culinary scene and a distinct sports culture, all set within vast, open terrain. It’s an environment that easily earns its reputation as a multi-dimensional corner of the continent.

South Africa caters to all different styles of travel

It also caters to different styles of travel. Whether the goal is independent cultural exploration, high-energy adventure, family bonding on holiday or a more considered, slow-paced journey, South Africa offers enough breadth to suit each approach.

South Africa is set to be one of 2027's most coveted destinations. The country surpassed one million international arrivals in August this year alone (1,005,286 visitors, to be precise). And the UK remains its biggest European market, with over 400,000 Brits visiting annually.

The country was recently the subject of Oti Mabuse and Reverend Richard Coles' hit Channel 4 feature, Oti and Richard's South African Odyssey, as they traversed the country, including the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Its Winelands are the backdrop for Love Island All Stars, while the 2026 all stars edition of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! was filmed close to the iconic Kruger National Park.

Where to visit in South Africa

Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is a hub of African wilderness, home to an extraordinary density of wildlife. It houses more species of large mammals than any other reserve on the continent, alongside hundreds of bird and plant species, making it the most popular spot for safari holidays in South Africa.

Singita Sweni Lodge sits on the Sweni River

Singita Sweni Lodge, located in the park, makes an excellent base to explore while keeping wellness at the forefront. It’s a riverfront lodge dedicated to holistic wellbeing, with yoga decks, digital detox and nature immersion all on the agenda. In short, you can combine safari experiences with restorative wellness.

Northern Cape

Framed by ancient mountains, vast desert plains and seemingly never-ending starry skies, the Northern Cape offers an extraordinary sense of space and stillness, while you're surrounded by remote beauty. It’s a perfect for travellers seeking untamed wilderness and complete peace away from the crowds.

Tswalu Kalahari is the perfect place to stay, given it's South Africa's largest private wildlife reserve. It leverages vast privacy of the Southern Kalahari, so you can immerse yourself in nature; think stargazing, sleep-outs under the open skies, tailored yoga and spa therapies.

KwaZulu-Natal

Stretching from dramatic mountain peaks to the Indian Ocean, KwaZulu-Natal captures the vibrant essence of South Africa. For holidays where you want to experience authentic connection to land and water, it's ideal. There's also mountain serenity and coastal safari luxury aplenty.

St. Lucia Estuary, the core of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Makakatana Bay Lodge offers a tranquil anchor, as it's a private camp on the western shore of Lake St Lucia, inside the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and is the only privately owned lodge within the park, having been family owned since it opened in 1999.

Western Cape

Home to world-renowned winelands like Paarl and the Cape Winelands, the Western Cape combines mountain backdrops with sun-drenched vineyards to produce internationally acclaimed vintages. It's perfect for wine lovers who want to do tastings and experience farm-to-table dining.

Western Cape is renowned for its vineyards

If you want to visit what is arguably South Africa’s most beautiful province of Western Cape, the Santé Wellness Retreat & Spa (located in Paarl) is a dedicated health retreat with holistic assessments, hydrotherapy, stress management and vinotherapy, which is spa and skincare practices using byproducts of winemaking.
