Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell's youngest, Wyatt Russell, found quite a different path to stardom compared to his other actor siblings, Kate and Oliver Hudson.
While Kate and Oliver naturally made their way to the industry, Wyatt, 39, rejected it at first, instead building a career as an ice hockey player in the United States, Canada and Germany for a few years.
An injury sidelined his tenure on the ice, and by the early 2010s, Wyatt had fully turned to acting. Cut to 2026 and he's co-starring with his dad Kurt, 74, on the new season of Apple's Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Keeping private
During an appearance with his dad on the Table Manners Podcast, though, Wyatt spoke candidly about how he rejected the idea of Hollywood and fame at first, which especially was a contrast from the experience his sister Kate had.
"I have no desire to be in the spotlight," he shared, noting that even with his work as an actor now (and being married to another actor in Meredith Hagner) he's able to get by relatively undetected in the wild.
"Pretty good," Wyatt said of being out and about, adding: "Honestly the better things get, the less I have to be in the spotlight. I don't have social media, I just don't care about it. I just like doing the thing I do."
The Black Mirror star explained that it was a peek behind the Hollywood machine that he got from a very young age that turned him off the industry, especially if "you were like I was as a human being."
Wyatt and Kate's different approaches
He did say, though, that not everyone in the family felt the same way, especially his sister Kate, who gravitated towards the stage and screen from a young age. At age 11, Kate performed at the Santa Monica Playhouse, making her film debut at 19 in 1998's Desert Blue, earning her very first Oscar nomination for 2000's Almost Famous.
Now, 25 years later, Kate is nominated for her second Oscar for her turn in Song Sung Blue. "That's not everybody, my sister's not like that," Wyatt continued.
"But I didn't like what I saw, I didn't enjoy some of the things that I saw." He did add that he was glad to have some kind of anonymity despite his fame at this point. "I've been able to skirt most of it."
Going discreet
"Now I have my own kids and we do things our own way," he shared, saying also that he's been grateful to not have to deal with extensive public recognition in comparison to other members of his family, thanks especially to his off-duty appearance. "People are more respectful of coming up, I don't give off the vibe, I usually have a huge beard and long hair."
Wyatt and Kurt joked that his beard and long hair almost make him look like he's "playing a part" or going incognito for a role, quipping that his next role will see him as a "scientist."
