Having starred in one of the most beloved teen movies of all time, actress Mia Sara revealed that her memories of filming Ferris Bueller's Day Off  are less glamorous than fans might expect.

The 59-year-old, who played Ferris's girlfriend Sloane Peterson in the 1986 classic, opened up in a rare interview after her many years out of the spotlight, detailing why she eventually stepped away from acting, and why she suffered a negative experience.

"I don’t really give interviews because making Ferris Bueller was not that good an experience for me," she told the Sunday Times. Before admitting, "I’m very aware of what a precious thing this movie is, and I don’t want to disappoint people. But I didn’t get along well with John," she said of the director, John Hughes, who died in 2009.

The Timecop star went on to reveal that John was a "strange guy", who wanted the cast to "hang out together and to introduce us to the French New Wave films." But by Mia’s own frank admission, she was not interested, describing herself as a "snotty New York kid that had seen all those movies, so he was frustrated in that desire."

Though there was one fond memory for the mother-of-two, who recalled her sweet crush on co-star Matthew Broderick, who played her on-screen boyfriend at the time.

"It was very much unrequited," she said, referring to how Matthew was secretly dating his onscreen sister, Jeanie Bueller, played by actress Jennifer Grey.

After Hollywood, Mia went on to find the real loves of her life: her family and poetry.

Her two children, whom she shares with ex Jason Connery and husband Brian Henson - Dashiell, 29, and Amelia, 21 - are where she now finds the most fulfilment. Living in "a 17th century farmhouse" in England, she told People, Mia and husband Brian, the son of late Muppets creator Jim Henson, have been married since 2010.

“I never really had the resilience to deal with the audition process,” Mia admitted. “There are some things in my career that I’m really proud of, but overall it was not a happy career for me.”

In June of 2025, the former actress stepped out of both her red carpet and acting retirement, to celebrate her role in Mike Flanagan's latest Stephen King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, her first in over ten years.

For the extra special outing, Mia wore a drapey black blouse paired with a fitted midi skirt and black ankle boots, accessorizing with chunky metal bracelets and earrings. Her salt-and-pepper hair was styled into a side-swept pixie cut.
