Al Roker found himself at the centre of an awkward on-air moment during his introduction on the Third Hour of the Today Show

As the opening credits rolled, the meteorologist began introducing the show before abruptly stopping after uttering the word, "The." Dylan Dreyer and Craig Melvin immediately burst into awkward laughter.

"Alright, welcome. Good morning," said Craig. "Did you lose your voice?" Dylan asked Al. "I've never heard that happen, you could have done it live," added Craig.

"But I didn't know if we were," replied Al. "Do it now, say it," said Dylan.

Al then proceeded to reintroduce the show. "Live from Studio 1A this is the Third Hour of Today and this happens to be the third birthday of one Sky," he said. "Yes!" replied Dylan and Craig in unison.

July 3 marked Al's granddaughter's third birthday. The NBC host took to Instagram ahead of the show to share a sweet tribute for Sky. "Three years ago, at 11:41am, Sky Clara Laga came into the world and made it juuuuust a little bit brighter. Happy Birthday, my smart, beautiful, funny granddaughter," he wrote alongside a montage of photographs.

The news anchor's daughter, Courtney Roker Laga, and her husband, Wesley Laga, welcomed their daughter in July 2023.

Following Sky's birth, Al shared how wonderful it was to become a granddad and how much she has influenced him in a positive way. "It is magical, it really is," he said on the Today Show.

"The thing is, everyone tells you it’s going to be this thing and you don’t know."

He continued: "It’s like when they tell you about having your first child. And then to hold this little girl, knowing almost 35 years ago I held her mom? ... she's just perfect."

Al Roker's relationship with his Today co-stars

Al previously spoke to us about the great dynamic he shares with his co-stars. "The great thing about the Today Show" is that "the sum is greater than its equal parts," he shared. "They've all subbed, they've all stepped in, and we don't miss a beat. So no matter what happens, we're going to be in great shape," Al ensured, noting that the show, which has been on the air since 1952, is "built to evolve."

He continued: "Each one of us is very fortunate to be in this position, for however long we have, and then we pass the baton off to somebody else. So the future of the show is just as strong and bright no matter who steps in."
