Today's Al Roker just majorly shut down his co-star. The longtime meteorologist and anchor jokingly told Craig Melvin to "sit down" during the Third Hour on Tuesday, June 23.
After Al and his fellow meteorologist Dylan Dreyer teamed up to deliver the weather news, Craig tried to join. "Weather team assemble!" the two declared as they stood up from the anchor desk, moving to dive into the wild weather across the United States.
Craig, who is not a meteorologist, stood up too, but was immediately shut down.
"No, you sit down Melvin," Al told his co-anchor. Dylan added: "Wait, where are you gonna go?"
But Craig wanted to be a part of the "weather team," reminding his co-anchors that he once did the West Coast weather.
"We threw you a bone," Al said. "Sit down." While Craig seemed to enjoy the teasing from the meteorologist, recent reports of Al's "mean" behavior on set have been swirling around the internet.
Al Roker's antics on the set
Al's former co-star, Billy Bush, accused him of "rageful" antics on the Today set during a recent appearance on The Nerve podcast. Billy, who briefly co-hosted the morning show with Al in 2016, claimed the longtime anchor of being "totally unprepared."
"There's something about me in particular, forever, that was like [he] likes me but fears me, didn't want me anywhere near," he told the podcast host, Maureen Callahan. "The way I describe Al is three words: territorial, vindictive and chronically unprepared."
He added: "He's maybe the worst interviewer on television." Billy went on to insist Al isn't the man viewers have fallen in love with.
"People don't know how mean he was," Billy quipped. "He's mean. He's mean. He's a mean person. When you say rageful and all that, it’s mean. There is rage in there. There's jealousy. And I talk about vindictiveness, but he's mean."
Al Roker and Craig Melvin's friendship
Regardless of Billy's experience with Al, the meteorologist has a loving friendship with his current co-star, Craig. Throughout their time together on Today, Al and Craig have really bonded.
"Some of my darkest moments, personally, it's been Roker who's called first to check on me, check on my family," Craig told People in August 2024. "He got a text message this morning from my parents wishing him a happy birthday."
Craig went on, sharing that Al was the first person at Today who made him feel welcomed.
"You know what? It started, I was new to the show," he said. "And the Today show is a very, it's a delicate ecosystem. It’s been around for more than 70 years. It’s an American institution. The inner circle is tight and guarded. They had invited me into the inner circle, and [Al] was the first one to welcome me with open arms.”
