Hermès Birkin bags have long been regarded as the ultimate status symbol, synonymous with wealth and exclusivity. Not only are they notoriously difficult to buy directly from the brand, but for those who miss out at retail, the resale prices can be eye-wateringly high.

You may be wondering what the most expensive Birkin ever made looks like. Billionaire Isha Ambani answered that question when she wore the exact one during Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.

Mukesh Ambani's daughter attended the Rahul Mishra runway show on July 6, where she was photographed carrying the Birkin Sac Bijou. According to Privé Porter and Sotheby's, the bag is worth an estimated $2 million — making it one of the brand's most expensive iterations.

Part of the maison's Haute Bijouterie Collection designed by Pierre Hardy, the mini purse is crafted from 18K solid white gold and hand-paved with 3,025 brilliant-cut diamonds that total more than 111 carats. The bezel-set round-cut diamonds are linked together and accented with white gold croc-effect on the flap. It only measures a few inches tall and the bag actually belongs to Isha's mother.

As for her outfit, the 34-year-old looked stunning in a grey gown featuring a bandeau-style sweetheart neckline with elegant ruched detailing. The corseted bodice was adorned with intricate jewels and shimmering sequins, while the skirt showcased a subtle ombré effect. She completed the look with a coordinating shawl draped around her shoulders for an added touch of opulence.

1. It was inspired by a chance meeting
The Birkin was created in 1984 after Jane Birkin met Hermès chairman Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight. As they talked, she described the practical handbag she wished existed. Dumas sketched the concept, laying the foundations for one of fashion's most iconic designs.

2. One artisan makes each bag
Every Birkin is handcrafted from start to finish by a single Hermès artisan. One craftsperson completes every stage, from preparing the leather and stitching the panels to fitting the hardware and inspecting the finished bag.

3. The design has barely changed
More than 40 years after its launch, the Birkin remains remarkably faithful to the original design. Its structured shape, flap closure, signature lock and saddle stitching have become instantly recognisable features.

4. There isn't just one Birkin
The Birkin is produced in several sizes, including 25, 30, 35 and 40, and is available in a variety of Hermès leathers. Different materials, colours and finishes give each bag its own distinctive character.

5. It began as a practical handbag
Although now regarded as a luxury icon, the Birkin was originally designed to meet Jane Birkin's request for a stylish yet practical everyday bag. That blend of function and craftsmanship remains central to its appeal.

Isha accessorized with a pair of bejeweled open-toe heels and a series of Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. Her necklace featured a single 30-carat cushion cut diamond drop on a rivière that included 40 carats. It perfectly matched her pear-shaped diamond stud earrings and a 7-carat oval-cut diamond ring. The star's luscious locks were swept back into an elegant, sleek updo while her makeup oozed soft glam, courtesy of a smoky eye, a bronzed cheek, and a nude lip.
