For such a new belief system, Scientology certainly knows how to make headlines with scores of celebrity endorsements (and criticism). Scientology is based on sci-fi writer L. Ron Hubbard's 1950 self-help book and centres on the belief that humans are actually immortal beings called 'thetans' who need help to return to their 'true' nature.
Read on to find out which famous faces grew up in the Church of Scientology, who found the practice later in life and who's putting their A-list paycheque towards its mission.
Jenna Elfman has been open about practising Scientology
Jenna Elfman
Dharma & Greg actress Jenna Elfman has been a member of the Church of Scientology for over 30 years, calling the controversy around the practice 'boring'. She told Us Weekly: "It's nothing to me. I know what I know, and how much it helps me."
Scientology has long been a subject of skepticism, an attitude built upon by former member Leah Remini's documentary investigation Scientology and the Aftermath, which included accounts from several other former members.
Perhaps Scientology's most famous advocate is Tom Cruise. The Mission: Impossible and Top Gun actor was first introduced to the practice by his then-wife Mimi Rogers.
He joined the Church in 1986 and was awarded the 'Freedom Medal of Valor' in 2004 for publicly praising the practice and debating the effectiveness of psychiatric medication.
Elisabeth Moss is perhaps a surprising member of Scientology's practice
Elisabeth Moss
Many fans of The Handmaid's Tale might be surprised to hear Elisabeth Moss was raised as a member of Scientology. With her on-screen work criticising an oppressive regime, Elisabeth's adherence to Scientology's strict structure might come as a shock.
Elisabeth responded to the suggestion viewers could be "distracted" by the clashing reality, saying: “People can obviously hold in their mind whatever they want to, and I can’t control that. If it’s not that, it’s going to be something else.” She was seen at the 2026 celebration of Scientology's late founder.
John Travolta is a well-known member of the Church of Scientology
John Travolta
It's automatic, it's systematic, why it's Scientology member John Travolta! The Grease star has been a member since 1975, practising the belief for over 50 years.
He's even delved into some of the founder's other sci-fi writing, beyond the Scientology foundational text Dianetics, starring in and producing an adaptation of Battlefield Earth.
Jason Dohring is a regular host on the Scientology Network
Jason Dohring
Some celebs keep their Scientology practice out of the spotlight, but for Veronica Mars actor Jason Dohring he's using his Hollywood reputation for hosting duties.
Jason is a regular on the Scientology Network, having been raised as a second-generation member. He's appeared on I Am a Scientologist and hosts Dianetics: Clear Talk.
The Simpsons and Scientology might not seem like natural bedfellows, especially as episode entitled The Joy of Sect parodies New Religion movements, including aspects of Scientology.
But Bart Simpson himself is voiced by member Nancy Cartwright who is reported to have donated over $21 million to the organisation.
I feel the need, the need to be afraid, be very afraid. As you wish. '80s cinema was packed with some iconic lines, but how many do you remember today?
