Mark Wahlberg shared a throwback of his wild hair transformation for the 2025 flick Flight Risk, which saw him partially shave his head and leave the sides long in a bizarre move.

The father of four took to Instagram on Monday to share a clip taken during the filming of the thriller, while he was at the gym with a friend early in the morning. Mark stood in an all-black workout outfit and gloves as the camera panned over to his friend, who was struggling on the floor after completing some intensive leg exercises.

"Throwback to Flight Risk… 4 am club," he wrote in the caption, as his family, friends and fans rushed to the comment section to share their shock at his wild haircut. "It's the hair," wrote his wife, Rhea Durham, while a fan chimed in: "My boy must of [sic] lost a bet."

"Mark. We need answers on the hair, please," said a third fan, while another added: "What's going on with your hair?" and a fifth queried: "Lost a bet? Did you bet on Argentina?" referring to the country's loss against Spain in the World Cup Final on Sunday night.

The throwback clip was taken when Mark was filming Flight Risk, a thriller co-starring Michelle Dockery and Topher Grace. The flick was released in 2025 and stars Mark as a villainous pilot.

The 55-year-old explained to People that he shaved part of his head every day of filming, which gave him "a stress-free rest of the summer".

The wild haircut was for his role in Flight Risk

"I was at the lake. I felt so good when I got out of the water, I [didn't] have to dry my hair or anything," he added. Mark then shared insight into the slow process of losing his hair. "There was no bald cap. I shaved the middle and left the horseshoe around the sides. We just shaved it," he said.

"They would shave the top as close to the scalp as possible every day, obviously, because we didn't have any stubble or anything. So I just hid it with a hat." Mark continued: "But the most priceless thing was seeing my wife's face when I took my hat off after getting the haircut for work that day."

The star added that his sons particularly loved the hilarious haircut. As for why he chose to go bald rather than rely on the hair and makeup team's tricks of the trade, he told People that he preferred the real thing.

The actor explained why he didn't want a bald cap

"I don't like the makeup chair. I mean, I don't like touchups and all that stuff," he told the outlet. "I kind of like to do all that prep and everything leading up to it. Then by the time we're actually working, I don't like to be kind of picked and poked and prodded. I like to kind of just do my thing."

"For me, yeah, it's not fun. You know, hopefully I can just kind of become the character," he explained. "Wearing a fake – either a wig or mustache, I always feel like it feels ridiculous."
