Alan Alda got his start with a cameo role in 1958

Who is Alan Alda?

Born on 28 January 1936, Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo, better known as Alan Alda, made his screen debut in 1958 with a cameo role on The Phil Silvers Show. 

Now, he's a beloved star with star credits on M*A*S*H, The Four Seasons and Oscar-winning drama Marriage Story.

Alan starred as swoon-worthy Captain 'Hawkeye' Pierce

M*A*S*H success

M*A*S*H ran for 11 seasons, following the adventures of medical staff at an Army hospital in the Korean War. Alan starred as resident heartthrob Captain Benjamin Franklin 'Hawkeye' Pierce, appearing in a total of 251 episodes between 1972 and 1983.

The series won 14 Primetime Emmys and set Alan up for success with a leading role in 1981's The Four Seasons and 1989's Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Alan and Arlene tied the knot in 1957

Marriage to Arlene

The year before he made his debut on screen, Alan tied the knot with wife Arlene. While his roles often cast the actor as something of a ladies man, off screen he was a devoted husband.

Alan and Arlene said 'I do' in 1957 and have been married ever since. She is a successful photographer and writer, penning children's books like Iris Has a Virus and Arlene Alda's 1 2 3.

The oldest of Alan's three children, Eve Alda, works as a producer

Eve Alda

Eve Alda was born on 18 December 1958, the oldest of Alan and Arlene's three children. She's worked as producer on short film Francis and upcoming short feature Ladies' Night

She is a mother of two, welcoming sons Scott and Jake with James Coffey. Scott has also worked as a producer and actor, notably appearing in the military thriller The Outpost, while Jake aspires to follow in his grandfather's footsteps as a screenwriter and maintains a popular presence on TikTok.

Elizabeth Alda now works as a teacher for students with additional needs

Elizabeth Alda

Elizabeth Alda was born on 20 August 1960. She worked as an actress alongside her father in The Four Seasons and the series of the same name, as well as horror feature Night of the Creeps.

She later retrained as a teacher, according to an interview with her father, working with deaf students and those with additional needs.

Beatrice Alda has worked as an actress, producer and director

Beatrice Alda

Born on 10 August 1961, Beatrice Alda is the youngest of Arlene and Alan's three children. She starred alongside her famous father in The Four Seasons and A New Life, and appeared in 1990 feature Men of Respect. 

She has regularly collaborated with her long-term partner Jennifer Brooke on projects like LGBTQ+ documentary Out Late and co-directed Legs: a big issue in a small town.

Alan is still working as an actor today

Where is he now?

Alan is still working as an actor today, with recent credits including the TV adaptation of his famous film credit The Four Seasons, TV movie Ray Donovan and Marriage Story.

He has been open about life with Parkinson's disease as a working actor, publicly revealing his diagnosis in 2018.
