The actress became a household name starring opposite Elizabeth Berkley in Paul Verhoeven's 1995 cult classic Showgirls. While the film was famously met with harsh reviews upon release and struggled at the box office, it has since been reappraised as a cult favorite, with Gina's portrayal of Cristal Connors widely praised.

In recent interviews, Gina has admitted the film also left her carrying unexpected emotional baggage.
Speaking on SiriusXM's The Julia Cunningham Show, she revealed she avoided watching Showgirls for years because she felt anxious about the Tennessee accent she created for her character after telling director Paul Verhoeven she was from the southern state to help secure the role.

The actress has also spoken candidly about trusting her instincts throughout her career. Before landing Showgirls, Gina turned down the lead role in Friday the 13th Part 2 after learning her character would appear topless before being killed, later describing the scene as "exploitative."
